your roadmap

One page, start to finish. Which timeline you are on depends entirely on whether you are chasing the scholarship — and that decision has to be made about a year ahead.

01the whole journey

The timeline below is the scholarship route, because it starts earliest and it is the one worth aiming at. A self-funded applicant joins it around the spring and drops the first two rows.

14–12 months out

Decide your route, and find the sending partner

Stipendium Hungaricum runs through Tempus and through a designated sending partner in Nepal. Confirm who that currently is before the window opens — it changes between cycles.

12–10 months out

Apply for the scholarship

Roughly November to January. Two programme choices, a motivation letter that is genuinely scored, academic documents, and a medium-of-instruction letter if you are using one instead of IELTS.

9–7 months out

Medical entrance exams, if applicable

Medical programmes set their own entrance examination or interview in biology and chemistry. Separate from the scholarship, and on the university's timetable.

6–4 months out

Awards announced; self-funded applicants apply directly

Results by summer. If you did not win, this is when the self-funded route begins and tuition is paid.

4–3 months out

Criminal-record certificate, and the MoEST NOC

Start the police clearance now — with certified translation it is realistically several weeks, and it is the longest item on the Nepal side.

3–2 months out

Apply for the study residence permit

Through the mission covering Nepal or the online system. It doubles as your Schengen entry visa. Four to eight weeks.

1 month out

Accommodation and travel

Scholarship holders receive a dormitory place or a housing contribution. You need accommodation evidence for the permit, so this is not an arrival task.

on arrival

Register your address, finalise the permit, sort health cover

Then orientation. Classes begin early to mid-September.

03pre-departure

One item is genuinely unusual here and is easy to underestimate.

start this the day your award or offer arrives

The criminal-record certificate, with certified translation, is a standard requirement for the Hungarian permit — and between issuing and translation it is realistically several weeks on the Nepal side.

Everything else is ordinary preparation:

Accommodation

A dormitory place if you have the scholarship, or a rental agreement. Needed for the permit file, so arranged before you fly.

Health insurance

A compliant private policy, or the Hungarian student health route once you enrol. Check which your permit requires.

Flights

Not covered by the scholarship. For a Nepali student this is a real line in the budget and the scholarship pages do not foreground it.

Copies and scans

Award letter, permit, insurance, accommodation proof and the translated police clearance. Keep a set reachable without your laptop.

04your first weeks

Lighter than most destinations here, because the permit was granted before you travelled.

The sequence: register your address, finalise the residence permit formalities, arrange the student health route, then a bank account and a phone

sector, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · partial

There is no equivalent of Malta's ninety-day permit deadline or Cyprus's one-week registration scramble — the substantive immigration work happened in Nepal. What remains is address registration, finalising the permit formalities and getting your health cover in place.

Use the slack. The first weeks are a good time to start Hungarian, which matters more for your prospects here than the brochures suggest.

05working while you study
real hours — but we could not verify the exact cap

sources disagree — ask your university

sector — figures range from 24 to 30 hours a week in term · checked 2026-06 · partial — the entitlement is real and extends in vacation periods; it is the precise number we could not settle against a Hungarian government source · ⚠ volatile — confirm the current cap with your university before taking a job

What is consistent across sources is that Hungary's student work allowance is substantial, applies during term and extends in vacation periods. That makes it genuinely better than Cyprus's six-month wait or Malta's employment-licence chain.

For scholarship holders in particular, part-time work is the normal way of closing the gap between the stipend and Budapest's actual costs. Confirm the current cap with your university before taking a job — that is the party that will care if it is wrong.
