That is genuinely simpler than Malta's two-stage route or Cyprus's entry-permit-then-registration sequence. It also means the whole assessment happens before you fly, so there is no post-arrival deadline hanging over your first weeks beyond registering your address.
Hungary may not have a mission in Nepal, so applications are likely routed through a mission covering Nepal or lodged online. Confirm which applies to you before planning travel.
This is the practical wrinkle for a Nepali applicant. Ask your university's international office exactly where your application should go and whether it can be submitted online — before you plan travel or make assumptions about timing.
A documentary assessment, and one where a scholarship award does a lot of work for you.

For a self-funded applicant the financial evidence is the substantive part of the file. For a Stipendium Hungaricum holder, the award letter substitutes for much of it — the Hungarian government is the one funding you, which is about as clean a funding story as exists.
There is no genuine-student interview and no motivation essay in this file. Your motivation letter belongs to the scholarship application instead, months earlier, where it is genuinely scored.
Hungary expresses this as a monthly figure covering your intended stay, which is a more forgiving shape than a single large balance.

Two things follow. It scales with the length of your programme, so a six-year medical degree asks a very different question from a two-year master's. And because it is a monthly figure denominated in forint, exchange-rate movement between your bank statement and the assessment is a real if minor factor.

As always, treat the threshold as a floor for the permit rather than a budget. Hungary is genuinely cheap by EU standards, but the published minimum is a minimum.
A missing criminal-record certificate
Hungary asks for one as standard, with certified translation. It is slow to obtain in Nepal and it is not optional.
Translations that are not certified
A translation done informally is not the same document. Use a route the mission will accept.
Unclear finances, if self-funded
The monthly figure across the whole intended stay has to be evidenced, not asserted.
Missing accommodation evidence
A dormitory allocation or a rental agreement is part of the file, not an arrival task.
Applying too late
Four to eight weeks of processing, after the NOC and the police clearance. September fills up.
Wrong channel
Sending an application to a mission that does not handle Nepal costs weeks. Confirm first.
The pattern here is Nepal-side rather than Hungary-side: the police clearance and its certified translation are the long poles, and they are entirely within your control if you start them early.
Start the criminal-record certificate the moment you have an offer or an award, not when you begin the permit application. Between obtaining it from Nepal Police and getting a certified translation the mission will accept, it is realistically several weeks.
