working & staying

Hungary gives graduates something Cyprus and Malta do not: a defined period to look for work, with real routes at the end of it. The constraint is language, not law.

01the job-search permit

Start with what exists here and does not exist in much of this tier.

Immediately after graduating: a job-search or entrepreneur residence permit, commonly reported at around nine months, to find work or start a business

With an offer in hand: the EU Blue Card for higher-salary professional roles, or a national work permit for other skilled jobs, with intra-EU mobility available once settled

That is a materially better position than Cyprus or Malta, where staying depends on securing sponsorship before your student status ends. Here you graduate, then get a defined window to search — the same shape as Germany's eighteen months or Ireland's Stamp 1G, if shorter.

The window also carries a quieter benefit: you can look for work from inside the country, legally, without an employer having committed to you first. That changes what kinds of jobs are realistically open to you.

02medicine — the different question

For medical graduates this page is mostly about Nepal rather than Hungary, exactly as it is for China.

an EU-recognised degree is not a Nepali licence

A Hungarian medical degree is EU-recognised, but practising in Nepal still requires satisfying the Nepal Medical Council — a recognised university and its licensing examination.

Nepal Medical Council / sector · checked 2026-06 · partial · Nepal Medical Council ↗ · ⚠ volatile — recognition lists and examination rules change — verify with the NMC for your intake

The Hungarian degree is genuinely strong — recognised across the European Union, from universities that have taught medicine in English for decades, which opens EU clinical routes that a Chinese MBBS does not. That is a real difference and it is worth paying for.

But if your plan is to practise in Nepal, the decisive step is the Nepal Medical Council's, not Hungary's. Check the recognised list before you enrol, and treat the licensing examination as part of the six-year plan rather than something to think about at the end of it.

03the market you would be entering

Hungary's graduate market has a sharp geographic and linguistic shape, and pretending otherwise would not help you.

Where the English-speaking jobs are: Budapest's shared-services, technology and engineering sectors, which hire international graduates in English at real volume

And everywhere else: Hungarian is a major advantage for most roles outside Budapest's international sector, and is relevant to settlement as well as employment

sector, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · partial

Budapest's shared-services, technology and engineering sectors hire international graduates in English at real volume — this is a genuine, well-established route rather than a theoretical one. Outside those sectors, and outside Budapest, Hungarian moves from useful to necessary.

The practical implication for anyone who wants to stay: learn Hungarian during the degree, or plan to work in Budapest's international sector. Those are the two viable strategies, and drifting into neither is how graduates end up leaving.

04settlement

Hungary offers a defined settlement path, which puts it ahead of most of this tier.

the clock is real; how study time counts is not settled

EU long-term residence is available after around five years of legal residence — but how much of your study time counts toward that total is something we could not verify for Hungary.

general EU practice — Hungary treatment not verified · checked 2026-06 · partial · ⚠ unverified — confirm with the immigration authority

As an EU member state Hungary operates EU long-term residence after around five years of legal residence. As in Cyprus and Malta, the complication is how much of your study time counts toward that total — and we could not verify Hungary's treatment to a standard we would publish.

Assume the effective clock builds through employment, and confirm anything better yourself. Note also that Hungarian language ability is relevant to settlement, not merely to employment.

If you want a fully funded EU degree

Hungary is the strongest option in this tier, and Stipendium Hungaricum is why.

If you want English-taught medicine in the EU

Hungary, with the NMC check done first. The degree is stronger than the non-EU alternatives.

If you want the longest job-search window

Germany's eighteen months and Ireland's two years both exceed Hungary's. Hungary still beats Cyprus and Malta, which have none.

If you want to settle without a new language

Ireland and Malta are the English-speaking EU options. Hungarian is a real requirement here over time.

05going home, or going onward

An EU-recognised Hungarian degree travels well, which makes all three outcomes — staying, moving elsewhere in the EU, or returning — genuinely open.

For onward movement inside the EU your qualification needs no special recognition. For a return to Nepal, or for a regulated profession anywhere, you will need attested certificates and transcripts — much easier to arrange while you are still enrolled.

Medical graduates should begin the NMC process well before graduation rather than after returning. The requirements are published, and finding out what they are while you still have a university registry that answers you is worth a great deal.
