study in Hungary

The one destination in this tier where studying for free is a realistic plan rather than a long shot — and where the application that gets you there does not need IELTS.

01start with the scholarship

Most country pages on this site open with a warning. This one opens with an opportunity, because Hungary's central fact is a scholarship that a Nepali student can actually win.

The Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government's fully funded scholarship for international students, and Nepal is an eligible partner country.

Tempus Public Foundation, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · verified · Tempus ↗ · ⚠ volatile — the eligible-country list and the cycle dates are set annually — confirm both for your intake

Two features make this different from the fully funded scholarships students usually hear about. The acceptance rate is far higher than Erasmus Mundus — reported at around one in six rather than one in fifty. And IELTS is generally not compulsory: an English-medium-instruction letter from your Nepali school or college is commonly accepted instead.

What it covers: tuition in full, a monthly stipend, a dormitory place or a housing contribution, and health cover provisions

How you apply: through the Tempus Public Foundation's online system and your sending partner in Nepal, on an annual cycle running roughly November to January with awards by summer

What it does not cover: international flights, and the gap between the stipend and Budapest's actual living costs

Tempus / sector, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · partial

The catch is timing, not difficulty. The cycle runs months ahead of ordinary admission — applications around November to January, awards by summer — so a student who decides on Hungary in spring has already missed it for that year. Treat it as a separate, earlier track.

02if you are coming for medicine

Hungary's English-taught medical degrees are well established and EU-recognised, and they are a major reason Nepali students come here. They are also the exception to everything above.

the same licensing tail as China, on a better degree

A Hungarian medical degree is EU-recognised — but to practise in Nepal you must still satisfy the Nepal Medical Council, which means a recognised university and its licensing examination.

Nepal Medical Council / sector · checked 2026-06 · partial · Nepal Medical Council ↗ · ⚠ volatile — recognition lists and examination rules change — verify with the NMC for your intake

The degree itself is stronger than the equivalent in most of this tier — recognised across the European Union, from universities with long histories of teaching medicine in English. But recognition in the EU and a licence in Nepal are different things, and practising at home still runs through the Nepal Medical Council.

And the cost, which is the other exception: roughly €12,000–18,000 a year for medicine and dentistry, against €3,000–8,000 for other English-taught programmes

So medicine breaks both of Hungary's headline advantages at once: it is the expensive programme in a cheap country, and it carries an obligation the other degrees do not. That is not an argument against it — it is an argument for checking the NMC's recognised list before you apply, not after.

03what the rest of it looks like

Outside medicine, Hungary is one of the better-value propositions in this guide, and unusually complete.

The status: an EU member state inside the Schengen Area, where the study residence permit doubles as your Schengen entry visa

sector, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · verified

The catalogue: several hundred English-taught programmes across around thirty universities

The cost of living: roughly €500–700 a month, among the lowest in the European Union, with Budapest above the range

sector estimate · checked 2026-06 · partial · ⚠ volatile — no official student cost-of-living figure is published — orientation only

Work while you study: substantial term-time hours with extended hours in breaks, though reported caps differ between sources

sector · checked 2026-06 · partial · ⚠ volatile — sources disagree on the exact cap — confirm the current rule with your university before relying on it

Read those together and Hungary compares well against everything else in this tier. It has Malta's EU and Schengen access with Poland's low costs, real work rights rather than Cyprus's conditional ones, and a post-study job-search permit that Cyprus and Malta lack entirely.

One structural convenience worth naming: the study residence permit doubles as your Schengen entry visa, so there is no separate visa to obtain before it.

04honest pros & cons

✓ A fully funded scholarship you can win

Stipendium Hungaricum covers tuition, a stipend and accommodation, Nepal is eligible, and the odds are far better than Erasmus Mundus.

✓ IELTS often unnecessary

A medium-of-instruction letter is commonly accepted for the scholarship — a real saving in time and money.

✓ Among the cheapest living costs in the EU

Outside Budapest especially, a modest budget goes a long way.

✓ EU and Schengen

European travel, and a permit that doubles as your entry visa.

✓ Real work rights, and a job-search permit after

Substantial term-time hours, plus around nine months to find work after graduating.

✓ A five-year route to EU long-term residence

A defined settlement path, unlike China or the UAE.

✕ Medicine is expensive and licence-bound

The costly outlier in a cheap country, with the NMC still standing between you and practice in Nepal.

✕ Probably no consulate in Nepal

The permit is likely applied for through a mission covering Nepal or online — confirm the channel early.

✕ Hungarian matters more than the brochures say

Fine for study; a real constraint for work outside Budapest's international sector, and relevant to settlement.

✕ Miss the scholarship cycle and you self-fund

The dates are early and unforgiving, and there is no second round.

05how to read the sources

A note on the confidence behind the figures on these pages.

the scholarship terms move every cycle

Stipendium Hungaricum's stipend amounts, participating universities and Nepal sending partner are set per cycle, and most figures circulating online are a year or more out of date.

our own sourcing review · checked 2026-06 · partial

Stipendium Hungaricum stipend amounts, the list of participating universities, the eligible programmes and the Nepal sending partner are all set per cycle. Figures quoted on third-party sites are frequently a year or two old, and the difference matters when you are budgeting a whole degree around them.
