how to apply from Nepal
There are two entirely different routes into Hungary, and the difference between them is roughly six months of lead time. Pick yours before anything else.
This is the decision that shapes everything downstream, and students routinely discover it too late to take the better option.
Route A — Stipendium Hungaricum
Fully funded. Applications around November to January, awards by summer, arrival in September. You apply through Tempus and through a sending partner in Nepal, and IELTS is generally not required.
Route B — self-funded
Apply directly to the university, largely in spring, and pay tuition yourself. More flexible, far later, and the route most people end up on because they missed Route A.
The Stipendium Hungaricum cycle runs roughly November to January with awards by summer. Miss it and the only route that year is self-funding — there is no second round.
If you are reading this between roughly September and December for entry the following September, you are in the window for the scholarship and should treat that as the priority. If you are reading it in April, you are almost certainly on Route B for this year — which is a reason to consider whether waiting a cycle is worth a fully funded degree.
Nothing stops you doing both: applying for the scholarship and, if it does not come through, self-funding. That is the sensible default for anyone whose timing allows it.

Identify the Nepal sending partner
Stipendium Hungaricum runs through a designated sending partner in each country as well as through Tempus. Confirm who that currently is before the window opens — it changes.
Apply for the scholarship
Roughly November to January. Two programme choices, a motivation letter, academic documents, and a medium-of-instruction letter if you are using one instead of IELTS.
Medical entrance exams, if you are applying for medicine
Medical programmes commonly set their own entrance examination or interview in biology and chemistry, separate from the scholarship process.
Awards announced; self-funded applicants apply
Scholarship results arrive by summer. If you are self-funding, this is when direct applications and tuition payment happen.
MoEST NOC, and the criminal-record certificate
Both take time in Nepal. The police clearance needs a certified translation, and it is a required document rather than an optional one.
Apply for the study residence permit
Through the mission covering Nepal or the online system. It doubles as your Schengen entry visa, so there is no separate visa stage. Four to eight weeks.
Accommodation and travel
Scholarship holders get a dormitory place or a housing contribution; self-funded students arrange their own. You need accommodation evidence for the permit.
Register your address, finalise the permit, sort health cover
Then orientation. Classes begin early to mid-September.
Hungary's entry requirements contain one genuinely useful concession for Nepali applicants.

Hungarian: not required for English-taught programmes, but a real advantage for work and relevant to settlement
Undergraduate entry from Nepal: Nepal's +2, assessed per programme
Medicine specifically: commonly an entrance examination or interview in biology and chemistry, set by the university and separate from the scholarship process
The medium-of-instruction concession is worth understanding precisely. It is a letter from your Nepali school or college confirming you were taught and examined in English, and where it is accepted it replaces IELTS entirely — saving a fee and several weeks.
Two cautions. Individual universities may still set their own English test even where the scholarship does not, so confirm per programme. And medicine is a different proposition: expect an entrance examination in biology and chemistry regardless of your English route.
Around thirty Hungarian universities host international students, and they specialise more sharply than in most systems here.
Budapest — the general universities
ELTE for humanities and computing, BME for engineering, Corvinus for business. Also where the English-speaking graduate job market is.
Budapest — Semmelweis
The best-known medical university in the country, teaching medicine in English for decades.
Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs
Large regional universities with long-established English-taught medicine, at meaningfully lower living costs than the capital.
Specialised institutions
Agriculture, veterinary science and the arts have their own institutions. Check which hosts your field.
For medicine there is a real geographic trade-off worth thinking about: the regional medical universities are strong and the cities around them are much cheaper, while Budapest carries the name recognition and the non-medical job market. Since medical students rarely work part-time anyway, the cost argument for the regions is stronger than it first looks.

Medium-of-instruction letter
From your Nepali institution, where you are using it in place of IELTS.
The item that catches people is the criminal-record certificate with certified translation. Several destinations in this guide ask for police clearance only sometimes; Hungary asks as standard, and the translation adds time on the Nepal side.
Scholarship holders have a lighter Nepal-side load than most students in this guide — with tuition covered there is less to remit, and the award letter does much of the work that bank statements do elsewhere. The police clearance and its certified translation still apply to everyone.
Confirm the permit application channel early. Hungary may have no mission in Nepal, which means applying through a mission covering Nepal or through the online system — a question to settle before you plan any travel.
