your documents

A short file with one long pole in it. The criminal-record certificate and its certified translation take longer than everything else combined, and almost nobody starts them early enough.

01what they ask for

The set below is what a Nepali applicant is normally asked for at the study residence permit stage. Your university and the mission handling your application each publish their own list on top of it.

Award or acceptance letter

The Stipendium Hungaricum letter of award, or your university's acceptance. Everything hangs off this.

Criminal-record certificate

A clean-record certificate from Nepal Police, with certified translation. Required as standard, not occasionally.

Passport and photographs

To Schengen specification, with biometrics taken at submission.

Proof of funds, or the award letter

The monthly figure across your intended stay — or the scholarship letter, which does much of this work.

Health insurance

A compliant private policy, or the Hungarian student health route once you are enrolled.

Accommodation proof

A dormitory allocation or a rental agreement. Part of the file, not an arrival task.

Tuition receipt

Self-funded students only.

Medium-of-instruction letter

Where you are using one instead of IELTS.

Scholarship holders carry a noticeably lighter file than self-funded applicants: the award letter stands in for financial evidence and the dormitory place covers accommodation. The police clearance applies to everyone.

02where things are lodged

Hungary may have no mission in Nepal, so the application is likely lodged through a mission covering Nepal or through the online immigration system. Confirm which applies to you before making any plans — this is the single most changeable detail on this page. The Nepali offices below are the ones you will actually visit.

03the criminal-record certificate
1

Start it the day your award or offer arrives

Not when you begin the permit application. Between issuing and certified translation this is realistically several weeks, and it is the item that most often delays a Hungarian file.

2

Obtain the police clearance from Nepal Police

Through the standard process. Our documents module covers the office, the fee and the steps.

3

Get a certified translation

An informal translation is not the same document. Ask the mission or your university what form of certification it accepts before paying for one.

4

Check the validity window

A clearance certificate issued too far in advance can be treated as stale. Time it against your permit application, not against your offer.

The requirement: a clean criminal-record certificate from Nepal Police, with a certified translation, as a standard part of the permit file

sector, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · partial

Why certification takes time: Nepal is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so there is no single apostille certificate — documents go through a chain of offices instead

04honest gaps

Two things we could not pin down to a standard we would publish.

The permit and consular fees: we could not verify a current figure

Hungarian immigration — fee schedule not located · checked 2026-06 · partial — described consistently as modest, but we found no official schedule we could read and cite · ⚠ volatile — ask the mission handling your application for the current consular and permit fees

The exact term-time work cap: sources disagree — ask your university

sector — figures range from 24 to 30 hours a week · checked 2026-06 · partial — the entitlement is real and substantial; it is the precise number we could not settle against a Hungarian government source · ⚠ volatile — confirm the current cap with your university before relying on any figure

The second is worth flagging because it is quoted confidently everywhere. Sources give figures ranging from twenty-four to thirty hours a week in term, sometimes with different rules in breaks, and we could not settle it against a Hungarian government page. Ask your university — it will know, and it is the party that matters if you get it wrong.

05the Nepal side

Most of your file is issued in Nepal and is identical whichever destination you choose. Each of these has its own guide with the office address, the fee and the steps.

Nepal step — the MoEST NOC comes after your offer and before you remit tuition

For a medical place, make sure the NOC names a university the Nepal Medical Council recognises. An EU-recognised Hungarian degree still has to satisfy the NMC before it licenses you at home.
