Dunedin is the most student-shaped city in New Zealand. The University of Otago is the country's oldest, and the town is organised around it to a degree no other city here approaches — student housing, student culture and student life dominate the centre.
That makes it an unusually easy place to arrive alone. The scale is small, everything is walkable, and the social infrastructure assumes you are a student rather than tolerating that you are one. Otago's medical and health-sciences schools are the country's most established.
The trade-offs are cold and isolation. Dunedin is far south, winters are genuinely cold with poorly insulated older housing, and the graduate job market outside health is thin — most students leave for Auckland or overseas after graduating.
