Auckland is where New Zealand's economy actually sits. Spread across two harbours and dotted with volcanic cones, it holds around a third of the national population and a much larger share of its corporate, technology and professional employment. If your plan involves working after study, this is where the roles are.
It is also the most diverse city in the country, with large Pacific, Asian and South Asian communities and a well-established Nepali population — which makes arriving considerably easier than it would be further south.
The cost is the trade. Auckland housing is expensive relative to New Zealand incomes, and the city is spread out enough that transport is a real budget line rather than an afterthought.

Climate
Warm, humid and subtropical by New Zealand standards. Mild wet winters that rarely need heating — the gentlest climate on this page.
Getting around
Buses, trains and ferries on an AT HOP card, with a tertiary student discount. The city is spread out, so pick housing on a transit line.
Housing
The largest cost. Flatting — sharing a house with several others — is the standard student arrangement. Inspect in person before paying a bond.
Working
Up to 20 hours a week in term time for most student visas, full-time in scheduled breaks. Hospitality, retail and care are the common first jobs.
Community
The largest Nepali community in New Zealand, with community organisations, grocers and restaurants well established.
Distance
Flights to Kathmandu are long and route through Asian or Australian hubs. Budget realistically for going home.
The Post Study Work Visa is granted for up to three years, depending on qualification level and field — the same rule in Auckland as anywhere in New Zealand. There is no regional bonus and no city advantage.
The thing that does change your outcome is the Green List — a national list of occupations with faster routes to residence. It is determined entirely by what you study and the level you reach, so check it before you choose a course rather than after you graduate. Auckland's genuine advantage is proximity to employers, not any immigration benefit.
