Cheaper than Australia at many institutions, and dramatically cheaper for doctoral study — where international students pay the domestic rate.
Look again at the top bar. International doctoral students pay the domestic rate — around NZD 8,000 a year rather than the NZD 30,000–50,000 an equivalent PhD costs in Australia, the UK or the US. If you are a doctoral applicant, that single policy may make New Zealand the cheapest serious option available to you anywhere.

Note that the proof figure and the real figure are close here — closer than in Australia, where the mandated number sits well below Sydney reality. Auckland and Wellington run at the top of the range; Dunedin, Hamilton and Christchurch run meaningfully below it, and that choice is worth real money over three years.
Genuine source of funds is an explicit 2026 focus. Money that appeared recently, or whose origin you cannot document, is the most common reason a New Zealand application fails.

The increase from 20 to 25 hours in November 2025 is a genuine improvement, and New Zealand's minimum wage makes those hours worth having. Note that raising your hours may require a variation of conditions and its fee — check whether your visa already carries the higher allowance before paying for a change you do not need.
