study in Christchurch
The South Island's largest city — flat, spacious and extensively rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake, with strong engineering programmes and costs well below Auckland.
Christchurch is the most practical answer to New Zealand's cost problem among the larger cities. Rebuilt substantially since the 2011 earthquake, it has a modern centre, an unusually flat layout that makes cycling genuinely viable, and rents well below Auckland's.
The rebuild also shaped the economy: civil engineering, construction, surveying and the associated professional services have been in sustained demand for over a decade. Agriculture and agritech across the Canterbury plains add to that.
The South Island setting is the other draw — the Southern Alps, Arthur's Pass and the Banks Peninsula are all within easy reach. Winters are colder than the North Island and houses can be poorly insulated.
One university plus a large polytechnic, both well outside Auckland prices.
University of Canterbury
Strong civil, mechanical and forest engineering; also sciences, business and teacher education.Lincoln University
Just outside the city; agriculture, agribusiness, viticulture and environmental management.Ara Institute of Canterbury
Polytechnic; nursing, engineering technology, IT, hospitality and trades.Christchurch is markedly cheaper than Auckland — housing above all — while remaining a city of real size with real employers. The flat layout means cycling is realistic, which removes a transport cost that Auckland imposes.
Against the other cities we cover in New Zealand, Christchurch is one of the cheaper. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.
The living costs you must show for each year of study are NZ$20,000 per year of study.
The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.
Climate
Colder than the North Island, with frosts and occasional snow in winter, and warm dry summers. Insulation and heating matter here.
Getting around
Buses on a Metrocard, and a flat city that is genuinely good for cycling. Cheaper to move around than anywhere else on this page.
Housing
The most affordable and available of the larger New Zealand cities. Flatting is standard; check insulation and heating before signing.
Working
Up to 20 hours a week in term time. Hospitality and retail, plus construction and engineering support work tied to the ongoing rebuild.
Community
A smaller but established Nepali and South Asian community, with grocers and community organisations.
The South Island
Mountains, lakes and national parks within a few hours. The cheapest recreation available anywhere in the country.
Post-study work rights are national — up to three years, depending on qualification level and field. Studying in the South Island earns you no additional time, despite what some agents claim.
The genuine Christchurch case is cost and sector: substantially cheaper living, plus an engineering and construction market with sustained demand. Several of those occupations appear on the Green List — check yours specifically, because the list is the mechanism that matters, not the city.
