This is worth stating flatly, because it is sold otherwise: in New Zealand, the Post Study Work Visa is determined by your qualification level and field, not your location. There is no regional extension, no city bonus, and no small-town shortcut.
What the city does decide is cost — Auckland is substantially more expensive than the South Island — and access to employers, which concentrate heavily in Auckland and Wellington.

Cost
Auckland is markedly the most expensive. Dunedin and Palmerston North are the cheapest places to be a student in the country.
The job market
Auckland holds roughly a third of the population and most corporate employment. Wellington is government and tech; Christchurch is engineering and rebuild work.
