the student visa
You will not attend a visa interview, submit a statement, or visit an embassy in Kathmandu. Your university sponsors your residence and files the application — which changes what you have to get right.
Start here, because it reframes everything else on this page.
A student residence visa is sponsored by the accredited university or college where you are enrolled, and the institution files it on your behalf.
A UAE residence visa always has a sponsor. For a worker it is an employer; for a student it is the accredited university or college — or a parent already resident in the country. The sponsor carries the legal relationship with the state, and you are admitted through it.
The alternative route: a parent already resident in the UAE can sponsor a student instead — sons up to the age of 25, and daughters until they marry
One consequence worth knowing early: a student sponsored by their university generally cannot sponsor a spouse or children on that basis
That last point catches postgraduate applicants. A married student who could bring a spouse to Australia or Canada on a dependent visa generally cannot do the same here on student sponsorship — and it is rarely mentioned until late.
Unusually, most of this happens after you have already flown. The entry permit gets you in; the residence visa is assembled on the ground.
Entry permit, obtained by the university
Lodged with the federal immigration authority by your institution's public relations officer once you are admitted and paid up. You travel on this, not on a residence visa.
Medical fitness test, after arrival
Blood tests and a chest X-ray at an approved centre. This is mandatory and it is a genuine pass/fail gate, not a formality.
Emirates ID
Your national identity card, and the key that unlocks a bank account, a phone contract, housing and most services. Nothing works without it.
Residence visa stamped
Tied to the duration of study stated on your university's certificate, and renewed as the course continues.
The medical fitness test: blood tests and a chest X-ray at an approved centre, completed after arrival and required before the residence visa is issued
The Emirates ID: the national identity card, required for a bank account, a phone contract, housing and most public services
Do not treat the post-arrival steps as arrival admin to get around to. Your legal status in the country is not complete until the residence visa is stamped, and the institution schedules these appointments — so being unreachable in your first fortnight causes real problems.
There is no genuine-student test here in the sense Australia, Canada or the UK mean it. The checks are narrower and more mechanical.
What the process turns on: genuine admission to an accredited institution, sufficient funds, a clean medical fitness test, and security clearance where it applies — not your intentions or your reasons for coming
So the questions that decide an Australian or Canadian application — why this course, why not at home, what will you do afterwards — are not asked. Your institution may ask them at admission. The state does not.
Which is why the SOP page for this destination is the shortest in the guide: the residence visa file contains no statement of any kind. What you write is for admissions only.
Delays here cluster around document quality rather than around persuasion — and two of them are unusually petty and unusually common.
Photographs that do not meet spec
The UAE is strict about photo clarity and rejects edited or low-resolution images. This causes more resubmissions than anything else on the list.
Bank evidence that is unclear
Not the amount so much as legibility and provenance — statements that do not clearly show whose account it is and where the balance came from.
A passport too close to expiry
Renew before you apply rather than during. Reissue from Nepal at short notice is slow.
Missing or unattested certificates
Where the institution requires attestation, an unattested document stops the file. Ask what it needs before you start.
A failed medical fitness test
A real outcome with real consequences, and it happens after you have already flown and paid.
Security clearance
Applies to some applicants and adds time you cannot compress. Ask your institution whether it expects it in your case.
Notice that the medical test sits after arrival. That is the one asymmetric risk in this destination: you commit the money and make the journey before the health check, which is the reverse of the order used by most countries in this guide.
The chain is unforgiving in one direction only. Nothing about your visa can begin until the institution is paid, and no Nepali bank will remit until the NOC exists. The NOC is therefore on the critical path of somebody else's work, not just your own.
