study in the UAE

The easiest visa in this guide and one of the most expensive degrees — a destination where the paperwork is somebody else's job and the money is entirely yours.

01the visa is not your problem

Almost every other page on this site is organised around a visa application you have to build, evidence and defend. The UAE inverts that, and it is the single biggest practical difference between studying here and studying anywhere else in this guide.

The student residence visa is sponsored and arranged by your accredited university or college — or by a parent already resident in the UAE. You do not file it yourself.

UAE government portal · checked 2026-08 · verified · u.ae ↗

You are admitted, you pay, you send documents to the university's own visa office, and it obtains an entry permit on your behalf. You fly in on that permit and complete the rest — a medical test, an Emirates ID, the residence stamp — after you land, with the university guiding each step.

The order it happens in: the university obtains an entry permit, you travel on it, and the medical fitness test, Emirates ID and residence stamp are all completed after you arrive

What you end up holding: a residence visa tied to the duration of study stated on your university's certificate, renewed as the course continues

There is no genuine-student essay, no credibility interview and no embassy appointment in Kathmandu. The friction in this destination is not administrative. It is financial.

02residence, never permanence

This is the structural fact about the UAE, and it is the one most worth understanding before you commit money to it.

there is no permanent residence to work toward

The UAE has no conventional permanent residence and no accessible citizenship route for students or graduates. Every stay is a sponsored, renewable visa.

UAE government portal, corroborated · checked 2026-08 · partial

Australia, Canada, Germany and Poland all publish a route that ends in settlement — a points test, a residence clock, a language threshold. The UAE publishes no such route. You live there on a visa that someone sponsors: your university while you study, an employer after that, or yourself if you qualify for one of the long-term categories.

The long-term ceiling: a ten-year renewable Golden visa, granted without a sponsor to outstanding graduates who meet the GPA and recency criteria

ICP (federal authority for identity & citizenship) · checked 2026-08 · verified · ICP ↗ · ⚠ volatile — the published GPA threshold differs between official sources — see the after-study page

That is not a criticism — a ten-year renewable residence with no sponsor is a genuinely strong outcome, and it is achievable on academic merit rather than on money. But it is a residence, and it is conditional. Plan the UAE as a place to study and work, not as a place to become a citizen of. Nobody does.

03what you are actually paying for

The UAE's academic offer is unusual and easy to misdescribe in both directions. Here is what it is.

The distinctive model: international branch campuses awarding the parent university's own degree, clustered in Dubai's academic free zones alongside UAE national and private universities

The language: English is the medium of instruction throughout, and no Arabic is required for admission or for study

sector, corroborated · checked 2026-06 · partial

A branch campus offers a degree awarded by the parent university, taught to its standards, two and a half hours' flight from Kathmandu instead of ten, in English. For a Nepali student who wants a British or Australian degree without a British or Australian visa, that is a real and underrated proposition.

Set against it: the fees are close to what the parent charges at home, and the living costs of Dubai and Abu Dhabi are not the discount the region's reputation implies. There is also one check you must make yourself — that the institution is genuinely licensed and accredited to operate in the UAE, because only a licensed institution can sponsor your residence visa.

04honest pros & cons

✓ English throughout, no language cost

No Arabic is needed to study or, largely, to live. Against China, Japan and Korea in this tier, that removes a year and a barrier.

✓ Your university files the visa

The lowest applicant paperwork of any destination in this guide, and no embassy appointment in Kathmandu.

✓ Foreign degrees, close to home

Branch campuses of recognised universities, at two and a half hours' flight rather than ten.

✓ Tax-free earnings after study

No income tax, in a region where Nepali graduates already have networks.

✓ A ten-year visa on academic merit

The Golden visa for outstanding graduates is real, needs no sponsor, and rewards results rather than money.

✓ A large, established Nepali community

Arrival is materially easier than in most destinations here.

✕ Expensive, and the fees are the point

Branch-campus tuition tracks the parent university. This is not a budget destination.

✕ Work during study is permission-based

Mostly on-campus roles and internships, with approval. Not the open part-time work of Australia or the UK.

✕ No permanent residence, ever

You stay by continuing to qualify. There is no clock that runs out in your favour.

✕ You cannot bring family on a student visa

A constraint that matters more to postgraduate applicants than anyone tells them.

05how to read the sources

One caution specific to this destination, and it is not the one you would expect.

the official sources disagree with each other

The UAE's own federal authority and the national government portal publish different GPA thresholds for the graduate Golden visa — and the figure most study-abroad sites repeat matches neither of them.

our own sourcing review · checked 2026-08 · partial

For most countries, the problem is that agency websites contradict the government. Here, two arms of the same government publish different numbers for the same visa — and the figure that circulates most widely on study-abroad sites matches neither. We have published what each says and told you where to check, rather than averaging them into something tidy and wrong.

Verify anything with a number attached against icp.gov.ae and u.ae, and anything about fees against your own institution.

Nepali students currently in the UAE: we could not verify one
