how to apply from Nepal

Two stages, and the second one is not yours. You get admitted and you pay; your university's visa office does the immigration work — which makes choosing a properly licensed institution the whole game.

01the two stages

The division of labour here is unlike anywhere else in this guide, and it tells you where to concentrate.

1

Apply to the institution and get admitted

Direct to the university. Academic transcripts, IELTS or TOEFL, passport copy, and usually a personal statement for admissions. Branch campuses assess Nepali qualifications broadly as their parent university would.

2

Pay tuition and the visa fees

The university will not begin the immigration process until it is paid. This is the point at which the MoEST NOC has to already exist.

3

Hand the visa file to the university's own office

Passport, photographs, the acceptance letter, proof of the payments, and bank statements or a sponsor letter. The institution's public relations officer lodges it.

4

The university obtains your entry permit

Issued through the federal immigration authority. You do not attend an embassy in Kathmandu at any point.

5

Fly in, then finish it on the ground

Medical fitness test, Emirates ID, and the residence visa stamped into your passport — all after arrival, all guided by the institution.

the check that makes all of the above possible

Only an accredited, licensed UAE institution can sponsor a student residence visa. Confirm the institution's licence before you pay anything — no licence means no visa, whatever the offer letter says.

Only an accredited, licensed institution can sponsor a residence visa. That is not a quality judgement you are being asked to make — it is a binary fact you can verify, and it determines whether the university can legally bring you into the country at all.

02the timeline

The UAE runs a September academic year with a substantial January intake. The visa stage is short by the standards of this guide; the money has to be ready long before it.

The intakes: September is the main intake, with a substantial January one at most institutions

10–8 months out

Shortlist, and check licensing

Decide between a branch campus, a UAE national university and a private one. Confirm each is accredited and licensed to operate — the visa depends on it.

8–6 months out

Sit IELTS or TOEFL

Branch campuses generally apply the parent university's own English requirement. Book early; retakes cost weeks.

6–4 months out

Apply, and start attestation

Fall applications commonly run March to July. Certificate attestation for Nepali documents is slow and is the step most applicants start too late.

4–3 months out

Accept the offer, get the MoEST NOC

Nepal's approval comes before the money moves, and the money has to move before the university starts your visa.

3–2 months out

Pay tuition and visa fees, submit the file

Passport, photographs, acceptance letter, payment proof, bank statements. Then it is out of your hands.

2–1 months out

Entry permit issued

The university sends it to you. Check every detail against your passport the day it arrives.

arrival week

Medical test, Emirates ID, residence stamp

Done in the UAE, in that order, with the institution's help. Do not delay it — your legal status depends on completing it.

03language & entry

This is the shortest section on any apply page in this guide, and that is the point.

English requirement: IELTS or TOEFL at the level the programme sets, commonly around IELTS 6.0–6.5

Arabic requirement: none — English-taught programmes require no Arabic for admission or study

Undergraduate entry from Nepal: Nepal's +2, assessed broadly as the parent university would assess it at home

Graduate entry: a recognised bachelor's degree, with field fit assessed per programme

Compare that with what the same student faces for China, Japan or Korea — HSK, JLPT, TOPIK, a preparatory year, or a Chinese-medium clinical rotation. The UAE asks for the English test you were probably taking anyway, and nothing else.

For a student weighing an affordable non-English destination against an expensive English one, that saved year is a real part of the calculation — and it belongs on the cost side of the ledger, not outside it.

04choosing an institution

The UAE offers three quite different things under one visa system, and the differences matter.

International branch campuses

A foreign university operating in a UAE academic free zone, awarding the parent's own degree. The reason most international students come.

UAE federal universities

National institutions, generally stronger in engineering, sciences and public administration, and often cheaper than branch campuses.

Private UAE universities

Locally established and accredited, with a wide quality range. Verify accreditation individually rather than by reputation.

Two questions settle most shortlists. Is it licensed and accredited in the UAE? — a precondition for sponsoring your visa. And, for a branch campus, is the degree awarded by the parent university on the same terms as at home? — because that, not the campus, is what an employer or a further-study admissions office will read.

Ask that second question directly and in writing. A degree certificate that names the branch differently from the parent is not necessarily worse, but you should know before you enrol rather than at graduation.

05the documents

Acceptance letter

From the institution. Everything downstream hangs off it.

Passport

Normally six months' validity or more, with clear scans.

Photographs

To specification. The UAE is notably strict about photo clarity and unedited images.

Academic transcripts & certificates

Attested where the institution requires it — check early, because attestation is slow.

IELTS or TOEFL

At the level the programme sets.

Proof of tuition and visa-fee payment

The university will not lodge anything before this exists.

Bank statements or a sponsor letter

Demonstrating cover for study and living. Unclear financial evidence is a common cause of delay.

Health insurance

Mandatory, and usually arranged around arrival.

Your institution's own list governs completely here — more so than in any other destination in this guide, because the institution is also your visa sponsor. Ask its international office for the current checklist and follow that.

06from Nepal
Nepal step — get the MoEST NOC before remitting tuition — and the university cannot start your visa until tuition is paid

That sequencing is tighter than it looks. In most destinations the NOC sits beside the visa application; here it sits in front of it, because payment triggers the immigration process. A slow NOC does not delay your paperwork — it delays the university starting yours.

The other Nepal-side item is attestation of academic certificates, which can run through Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the UAE mission. Confirm with your institution whether it needs this before you begin — requirements differ, and doing it unnecessarily costs weeks.
