Canberra is unlike the rest of this list. It was designed rather than grown, it is inland and elevated, and its economy is dominated by government, research and the national institutions rather than by industry. The result is a small, orderly, unusually green city where a student's life is organised around campus more than around a downtown.
It is famous for what it houses: the Parliament, the national galleries, libraries and archives, the war memorial, and the Australian National University — consistently Australia's strongest research university and unusually well-suited to students who intend to continue into research.
Two practical things surprise people. Winters are genuinely cold — sub-zero mornings and frost are normal, which no other city on this list can say. And Canberra is a designated regional area, despite being a capital.

The coldest city on this page. Frost and sub-zero mornings through winter, hot dry summers. Budget for heating and for real winter clothing.
Getting around
Buses and one light-rail line on a MyWay card. The city is spread out and designed around cars — cycling infrastructure is good, and campuses are well served.
Housing
Tight and not cheap for the city's size, because government salaries set the market. University accommodation is worth applying for early.
Working
48 hours per fortnight in session. Hospitality and retail; the large public-sector employers mostly require citizenship, which narrows the graduate market.
Community

Canberra's honest weakness is job-market breadth: the dominant employer is a public service that largely requires citizenship, so the private-sector graduate market is small for a capital.
