A warm, river-centred capital with a growing student population and lower rent than the south-eastern giants — but no regional visa advantage.
Brisbane is the compromise city: noticeably cheaper than Sydney and Melbourne, noticeably warmer than both, and large enough to have a real job market. For students from Nepal the climate is a genuine advantage — winters are mild enough that heating is barely a line in the budget, which is not true further south.
The city is in the middle of a long construction boom ahead of the 2032 Olympics, which has widened the entry-level job market in construction, hospitality and transport considerably. The pace is slower than Sydney's, the river organises the geography, and the centre is compact enough to walk.
Be careful with one common assumption: Brisbane is not regional. Much of the rest of Queensland is, including the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, so a small move can change your visa position substantially.

Climate
Subtropical: hot, humid summers with a real storm season, and mild dry winters. The most Kathmandu-adjacent climate of the six, and the cheapest to heat.
Getting around
Buses, trains and ferries on a Go card, plus the busway network. Compact centre; cycling is viable outside the summer heat.
Housing
Easier and cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne, though tightening as the city grows. Share houses near the university precincts are the usual route.
Working
48 hours per fortnight in session. Hospitality, retail, construction support and aged care; the Olympics build-out has widened entry-level demand.
Community
A smaller but growing Nepali population, with community groups and grocers established in the southern suburbs.

The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are designated regional areas. If the regional benefit matters to you, look at campuses there before settling on Brisbane.
Brisbane is not a designated regional area — it is named alongside Sydney and Melbourne as an excluded city, even though the rest of Queensland qualifies.
This is the sharpest version of the regional trade on this page, because the alternative is so close. A campus on the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast — an hour away, cheaper again — sits in a Category 2 area and can earn an additional year. Check the campus postcode against the Home Affairs list rather than assuming the state's status applies.
