study in Sharjah

The UAE's most affordable student city — a dedicated university district, directly beside Dubai, at a meaningfully lower cost of living.

Sharjah borders Dubai and is the emirate where the cost gap actually lives. It also has something neither neighbour does: a purpose-built University City, a single district containing multiple institutions, student housing, libraries and sports facilities.

The American University of Sharjah is the best-known institution — an independent, American-curriculum university with strong engineering and architecture programmes and a genuinely international intake. The University of Sharjah is larger and covers a broader range including medicine and health sciences.

Two honest notes. Sharjah is socially more conservative than Dubai, including a different position on alcohol, which some students consider and others do not. And the Sharjah–Dubai commute is short in distance and can be long in traffic.

02where you would study

Two substantial universities inside a purpose-built university district.

American University of Sharjah

An independent American-curriculum university; engineering, architecture, business and sciences.

University of Sharjah

A large accredited university covering medicine, health sciences, engineering, law and the humanities.

Links go to each institution’s own website. We are not an agent for any of them and are paid nothing if you apply — always confirm fees, entry requirements and intakes on the university’s own course page.

03what it costs here

Sharjah is the cheapest of the three on living costs by a clear margin, and it is close enough to Dubai that students studying there sometimes live here. Tuition is set by the institution, not the emirate, so the saving is on living costs rather than fees.

Against the other cities we cover in the UAE, Sharjah is one of the cheaper. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.

Living costs across the UAE run roughly AED 2,000–4,000 a month — the emirate you live in moves this more than anything else you control.

sector estimate · checked 2026-06 · partial — Dubai and Abu Dhabi at the top of the range, Sharjah below it; no official student cost-of-living figure is published · ⚠ volatile — orientation only — ask your institution for its own published estimate

We do not publish a rent figure for Sharjah. No government publishes one city by city, and the numbers that circulate come from consultancy blogs that cannot be checked. Your university publishes its own cost-of-living estimate for its campus — that is the number to plan with.

04living here

The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.

Climate

Identical to Dubai — severe summers, mild winters.

Getting around

Buses and taxis, with University City compact enough to walk within. The Dubai commute is the variable; traffic at peak hours is heavy.

Housing

Student accommodation within University City, and a private market clearly cheaper than Dubai's. This is where the emirate's saving is.

Working

Permission-based, exactly as in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The emirate changes nothing here.

Language

English at the universities; Arabic is more present in daily life than in Dubai.

Culture

The UAE's cultural capital, with major museums, and socially more conservative than Dubai — including on alcohol. Worth knowing rather than discovering.

05why the city matters
the cheaper emirate, and the limits of that

Living costs across the UAE run roughly AED 2,000–4,000 a month, and Sharjah sits at the bottom of that range while Dubai sits at the top.

sector estimate · checked 2026-06 · partial — Dubai and Abu Dhabi at the top of the range, Sharjah below it; no official student cost-of-living figure is published · ⚠ volatile — orientation only — ask your institution for its own published estimate

What it does not reduce: roughly AED 40,000–100,000 a year

sector estimate · checked 2026-06 · partial — international branch campuses; UAE federal universities are often materially cheaper · ⚠ volatile — no national fee schedule exists — take the figure from the institution's own page

Be precise about what Sharjah saves you. Living costs, genuinely and substantially. Tuition, not at all — fees are set by the institution, so a branch campus in Sharjah charges what that branch campus charges. And nothing about your visa, which is federal. The best use of this emirate is as the housing half of a Dubai education, or as a cheaper base if one of its own universities suits your subject.
