study in Stockholm
Sweden's capital, spread across fourteen islands — the country's deepest job market and technology sector, and its most difficult housing queue.
Stockholm is Sweden's economic centre and one of Europe's most productive technology ecosystems for its size — a genuinely unusual number of large software and consumer-technology companies were founded here.
The academic sector matches: KTH for engineering, Stockholm University for sciences and humanities, and Karolinska Institutet, one of the world's leading medical universities and the body that awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The geography is striking — a city built across islands, with clean water and archipelago access from the centre. The housing is the problem, and it is a queue problem rather than a money problem.
Three strong and quite distinct universities, plus applied institutions.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Sweden's largest technical university; engineering, computer science, architecture and industrial management.Stockholm University
Sciences, law, economics, humanities and social sciences, on a large northern campus.Karolinska Institutet
Medicine and health sciences only; among the world's leading medical universities.Stockholm is the most expensive Swedish city, and housing is the constraint in both senses — it costs more and it is harder to get at all. Tuition depends on your programme rather than the city.
Against the other cities we cover in Sweden, Stockholm is one of the more expensive. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.
Non-EU tuition in Sweden runs roughly SEK 80,000–295,000 a year, set by your university and programme.
The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.
Climate
Cold winters with snow and very short days, and long bright summers. December daylight is around six hours.
Getting around
An excellent metro, bus and commuter rail network on an SL card, with a student rate. Living further out is genuinely workable.
Housing
The hardest in Sweden. Register with the student housing queue the moment you can — allocation is by accumulated days, not by need.
Working
No formal hour limit on a student residence permit, but you must maintain full-time study progress. Technology and English-language service roles are the most accessible.
Language
English is near-universal. Swedish is what opens the wider job market, and free courses for immigrants are widely available.
Cashless
Sweden is close to cashless — a card and a Swedish bank account matter far more than currency. Open one as soon as you have a personnummer.
Stockholm student housing is allocated by accumulated queue days. Admission does not move you up the list, and neither does paying more.
Act on this earlier than feels reasonable. Register with the relevant student housing queue as soon as the system permits — for many students that is months before an admission decision. If you arrive without a room, the fallback options are sublets and short-term contracts, which are expensive and a known target for fraud. Never transfer money for a room nobody you trust has seen.
Stockholm is one of 3 cities we cover in Sweden. Tap any pin to compare — the city you pick moves your total cost more than almost any other choice you make.
