study in Gothenburg

Sweden's industrial second city — automotive and marine engineering, a major port, a large student population, and shorter housing queues than the capital.

Gothenburg is Sweden's manufacturing centre. The automotive industry is headquartered here along with marine and mechanical engineering, which gives technical students a direct line to employers that Stockholm's software-heavy economy does not replicate.

Chalmers University of Technology is among Northern Europe's stronger engineering institutions, and the University of Gothenburg is a large general university with well-regarded business and health faculties.

The city is more relaxed and less expensive than Stockholm, with a reputation for being easier to enter socially, and its student housing queues — while real — are shorter.

02where you would study

One technical university and one large general university, both central.

Chalmers University of Technology

Mechanical, automotive, marine and electrical engineering, architecture and computer science.

University of Gothenburg

Business, medicine, sciences, education and the arts; one of Sweden's largest universities.

Links go to each institution’s own website. We are not an agent for any of them and are paid nothing if you apply — always confirm fees, entry requirements and intakes on the university’s own course page.

03what it costs here

Gothenburg costs less than Stockholm on housing and daily spending, and its student housing queues are shorter. Tuition remains a function of your programme rather than the city.

Against the other cities we cover in Sweden, Gothenburg is mid-range. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.

The residence permit requires you to show a set monthly amount for each month of study.

We do not publish a rent figure for Gothenburg. No government publishes one city by city, and the numbers that circulate come from consultancy blogs that cannot be checked. Your university publishes its own cost-of-living estimate for its campus — that is the number to plan with.

04living here

The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.

Climate

Milder and wetter than Stockholm, being on the west coast — more rain, less deep freeze, the same short winter days.

Getting around

An extensive tram network plus buses and ferries, with student rates. The city is compact and easy to navigate.

Housing

Queues are shorter than Stockholm's but still real. Register as early as the system allows.

Working

No formal hour limit, subject to maintaining study progress. Engineering internships in the automotive cluster are the valuable route for technical students.

Language

English works throughout study and much of social life. Swedish widens the job market considerably.

Industry

Automotive, marine and mechanical engineering employers are concentrated here — the specific reason to choose Gothenburg.

05why the city matters
register before you are admitted

Student housing here is also allocated by accumulated queue days, though the queues are meaningfully shorter than Stockholm's.

The rule is the same everywhere in Sweden and it rewards only one behaviour: registering early. Do it before you have an admission decision if the queue permits. Everything else — the residence permit maintenance requirement, the post-study job-seeking permit — is national and identical across Swedish cities.
