your roadmap
The whole journey from Nepal to Italy, end to end — the longest sequence in this guide, and the one where starting on time matters more than anything else you do.
Eight stages across a full year. Two of them depend on third parties working to their own timetables, which is why Italy needs more runway than its costs would suggest.
Start the ISEE Parificato
Through a CAF or patronato, from your family's Nepali income and assets. It decides your tuition bracket and feeds the DSU scholarship assessment. Without it you pay the maximum, whatever your family earns.
Language and entrance tests
Italian B2 for Italian-medium; IELTS or TOEFL for English-medium.
Apply to universities
Through each institution's own portal. Get your admission letter.
Universitaly pre-enrolment
Mandatory, and a prerequisite for the visa. Generally one programme.
Credential validation
Declaration of Value from the consulate, or CIMEA. Slow — run it alongside stages 02 and 03.
MoEST NOC, then the visa
Nepal's approval, then the Type D application at the Italian mission.
Arrive, then 8 days
Apply for the permesso di soggiorno within 8 days — post-office kit, then a Questura appointment and biometrics.
Codice fiscale, enrolment, DSU
Your tax code, formal enrolment, and your regional scholarship application.
Italian student housing splits sharply between subsidised places tied to your scholarship application and an open market that is competitive in the big cities.
DSU student housing
Free or heavily subsidised, awarded alongside the regional scholarship. Apply when you apply for the DSU — the two are linked.
University residences
Limited places, allocated early. Ask your institution directly.
Shared flat
The common option, usually arranged after arrival and often in Italian.
Carry in hand: passport with visa, Universitaly confirmation, admission letter, your Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement, proof of funds, insurance and accommodation evidence. You will need several of these again within your first eight days.
You must apply for the permesso di soggiorno within 8 days of arriving — the post-office kit, then a Questura appointment and biometrics. Your visa gets you in; this makes your stay lawful.
Then, in roughly this order:
Your tax code: obtain a codice fiscale — Italy's tax code, needed for a bank account, a contract and most administration
Formal enrolment: complete formal enrolment at your university, which follows pre-enrolment rather than replacing it
And do not miss: your regional DSU scholarship application, which can bundle a tuition waiver, housing, meals and a stipend
Plan your arrival date deliberately — landing just before a holiday period, when post offices and Questura appointments are scarce, turns an eight-day deadline into a genuine problem.
The rule: 20 hours a week
Twenty hours a week is workable, but most student work in Italy happens in Italian regardless of your programme's language. That is the same constraint that decides whether your 12-month job-search permit turns into an offer.
Start Italian early. It is the difference between Italy being extraordinary value and Italy being a degree you collect and leave.
