student visa from Nepal

Two separate permissions: a consular visa that gets you into Italy, and a residence permit you must apply for within eight days of arriving. Missing the second one undoes the first.

01the essentials

The visa: the National Long-Stay Type D study visa, for courses longer than 90 days

You cannot apply until: you have completed Universitaly pre-enrolment — it is mandatory and comes first

Validity: typically 365 days with multiple entries; a provisional 100-day visa is issued in specific cases

What is checked: genuine admission, Universitaly pre-enrolment, sufficient funds and insurance — the consulate may interview you

Universitaly pre-enrolment is mandatory and sequential — the consulate will not take your application without it. It is one of the reasons Italy's timeline needs a full year rather than eight months.

02the 8-day rule

The single most important thing to know about arriving in Italy, and the one most likely to catch a student who thinks the visa was the finish line.

eight days, not eight weeks

You must apply for the permesso di soggiorno within 8 days of arriving in Italy. This is what legalises your stay — the visa alone does not.

The mechanism is a kit collected from a post office, submitted there, followed by a Questura appointment for biometrics. Your visa gets you into the country; the permesso di soggiorno is what makes your stay lawful.

Plan your arrival date with this in mind — landing immediately before a holiday period, when post offices and Questura appointments are scarce, is an avoidable problem.

05one thing not to do
your visa is tied to your enrolment

Withdrawing from or abandoning your enrolment voids both the visa and the residence permit — and neither can be reused for another institution or country.

Students sometimes treat a first enrolment as a way in, intending to switch. In Italy that does not work — abandoning the course voids both the visa and the permit, and neither transfers to another institution or country. Choose the programme you actually intend to complete.
