Glasgow is the counterweight to Edinburgh: bigger, cheaper, less polished and considerably more sociable. It was built on shipbuilding and heavy engineering, and the Victorian wealth that produced left it with some of the finest architecture in Britain and a set of free municipal museums to match.
It is famous now for music — a live scene disproportionate to its size — and for a reputation for friendliness that is genuinely earned. For students the practical appeal is straightforward: two well-regarded universities, a large student population, and rents well below Edinburgh's.
The Scottish four-year undergraduate structure applies here too, and the city has more deprivation and rougher edges than Edinburgh. Neither is a reason to avoid it; both are reasons to arrive informed.

Climate
Wet, mild and grey — wetter than Edinburgh, slightly less windy. Short winter days, no extreme cold.
Getting around
Buses, a small subway loop and a dense suburban rail network. The West End student area is walkable to the University of Glasgow.
Housing
Cheaper and more available than Edinburgh. The West End and Southside are the usual student areas; the private market is less pressured.
Working
20 hours a week in term time. Hospitality, retail, care and events; a larger market than Edinburgh outside festival season.
Community
A well-established South Asian population with grocers, restaurants and places of worship, particularly on the Southside.
Free culture
The municipal museums and galleries — Kelvingrove, the Riverside, the Burrell — are free, and among the best in Britain.
As across Scotland, undergraduate honours degrees here normally take four years, where English ones take three. Budget a fourth year of tuition and living costs that an English university would not charge.
The same qualifications apply as in Edinburgh: taught master's degrees are one year, and advanced entry into second year is possible at many Scottish universities for students with strong prior study. Ask admissions directly — it materially changes the total cost, and it is rarely volunteered.
