The UK's second city — central, diverse and notably cheap for its size, with a strong engineering and business sector and the lower out-of-London visa requirement.

Birmingham is the largest English city after London and one of the youngest in Europe by median age. It sits at the centre of the country's rail and motorway network, which makes it an unusually practical base — most of England is reachable in under two hours.

Its reputation rests on manufacturing and engineering, and that heritage still shapes the graduate market: automotive, aerospace, advanced manufacturing and the professional services that support them. The city also has one of the largest and longest-established South Asian populations in Britain, which makes arriving here materially easier than arriving somewhere homogenous.

On cost it is one of the strongest options in England — rents well below Manchester, let alone London, in a city with real employers.

02where you would study

Three universities of scale within the city, spanning research-intensive and applied.

University of Birmingham

Russell Group; a large green campus with its own rail station. Engineering, medicine, business and physics.

Aston University

City-centre campus known for placement years; engineering, pharmacy, optometry and business.

Birmingham City University

Applied and vocational; computing, media, art and design, nursing and the built environment.

Links go to each institution’s own website. We are not an agent for any of them and are paid nothing if you apply — always confirm fees, entry requirements and intakes on the university’s own course page.

03what it costs here

Birmingham is among the cheapest large cities in the UK to live in, and carries the lower out-of-London visa requirement. For a student optimising total cost without moving to a small town, it is one of the strongest combinations available.

Against the other cities we cover in the United Kingdom, Birmingham is one of the cheaper. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.

The maintenance money you must prove for a course here is £1,171 per month, for up to 9 months.

We do not publish a rent figure for Birmingham. No government publishes one city by city, and the numbers that circulate come from consultancy blogs that cannot be checked. Your university publishes its own cost-of-living estimate for its campus — that is the number to plan with.

04living here

The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.

Climate

Mild, damp, inland — slightly colder than the coastal cities in winter and slightly warmer in summer. Nothing extreme.

Getting around

Buses, trams and a dense local rail network. The compact centre is walkable; campuses are well served, and the University of Birmingham has its own station.

Housing

Among the cheapest of any large UK city. Selly Oak and Edgbaston are the student areas near the main campus.

Working

20 hours a week in term time. Retail, hospitality, logistics and care, plus the professional-services sector for internships.

Community

One of the largest and most established South Asian populations in the UK. Groceries, places of worship and community networks are easy to find.

Central location

Under two hours by train to London, Manchester and much of England — cheap travel for interviews and for seeing the country.

05why the city matters
the money you must prove

Birmingham is outside London for visa purposes, so the maintenance requirement is £1,171 per month, for up to 9 months.

Combine the lower requirement with Birmingham's rents and this is close to the cheapest realistic way to hold a UK Student visa in a major city. The Graduate visa afterwards is identical to London's — two years, unrestricted, wherever you studied.
