Madrid holds the Complutense, one of the largest universities in Spain, alongside the Politécnica for engineering and architecture and the Autónoma for sciences and social sciences. Several internationally known business schools are here too.
It is also where Spain's corporate economy sits, which matters given students have up to thirty hours a week of work rights and a twelve-month job-search permit afterwards. Madrid has the deepest pool of English-language roles in the country — though "deepest" is relative, and Spanish still opens far more doors.
The costs are the trade. Madrid sits at the top of Spain's living-cost range, and its regional tuition is not the cheapest either.

Climate
Continental and inland — genuinely hot summers, cold winters, and very little rain. Not the Mediterranean picture people expect.

One of the best metro systems in Europe, with a heavily discounted youth travel pass that covers the whole region.
Housing
Shared flats are the norm and the market is tight and expensive. Start looking early — and remember pre-paid accommodation reduces your visa funds requirement.
Working
Up to thirty hours a week automatically. Madrid has the most English-language work in Spain, though Spanish widens it enormously.
Language
Clear, standard Castilian Spanish — one of the easier places in Spain to learn it. English is common in international companies and rare elsewhere.
The city
A major European capital with world-class museums, and a social life that genuinely starts late. The Prado is free in the evenings.
Spain does not set tuition nationally: Spain's autonomous communities set their own tuition, so the non-EU price for the same subject differs between regions — and several universities have recently cut non-EU fees
What is national, and does not move: 100% of the IPREM per month of stay — currently €600 a month, so €7,200 for a year — set nationally and identical in every region

There is no national non-EU tuition rate, so a figure you read in a country guide — including the range on our own costs page — is an average of institutions that differ by thousands of euros. Look up the actual non-EU price list for your actual programme at your actual university, in the region you are considering.
