Daejeon was built up deliberately as Korea's research centre. The Daedeok science district holds a large concentration of government research institutes alongside KAIST, the country's leading science and technology university — an environment that is genuinely unusual in Asia for its density of publicly funded research.
For science and engineering postgraduates this matters concretely: KAIST teaches extensively in English and offers substantial scholarship support to international graduate students, which changes the financial picture considerably.
The city itself is central, well connected by high-speed rail — Seoul is under an hour — and much cheaper than the capital. It is also quieter, with a smaller job market and less English in daily life.

A single subway line plus buses, in a compact city. High-speed rail puts Seoul under an hour away.

The national rule applies here too: part-time work needs prior permission, with hours tied to your TOPIK level and academic standing.
Daejeon changes the arithmetic in a useful direction — lower costs mean the hours you are permitted go further. For postgraduate researchers there is a better route still: a funded assistantship or scholarship at KAIST or an affiliated institute is not part-time work under these rules and is not subject to the same hour bands. Ask explicitly what funding an offer carries.
