Korea has an embassy in Kathmandu, so there is no third-country trip and no hidden travel cost in your visa budget. What replaces it is preparation time — the friction here is front-loaded rather than geographic.
The choice is usually made for you by your Korean, but it is worth understanding what each costs.
D-2: a bachelor's, master's or doctorate at a licensed Korean university
D-4: a university-affiliated language programme, typically six months to two years, requiring no prior Korean
Converting: a D-4 converts to a D-2 inside Korea once the language programme is complete and you hold the required TOPIK level
A direct D-2 from Nepal is cheaper and simpler — one visa application, one set of fees, one arrival. The D-4 route adds a language programme, its tuition, its living costs and a conversion step inside Korea, in exchange for reaching a Korean-medium degree you could not otherwise enter.
If an English-taught programme fits your field, it removes that entire stage. That is the strongest practical argument for looking at Korea's English-taught catalogue rather than treating it as a second choice.
Get admitted
To a licensed university for D-2, or an approved language institute for D-4.
Get the MoEST NOC and transfer tuition
Nepal's approval first. The university issues the immigration-facing admission certificate after payment.
Start Korean Embassy document verification
Three to six weeks. Begin the day your acceptance arrives — this is the step that decides your intake.
Book the TB test
At a designated hospital in Nepal. Results take one to two weeks and must accompany the application.
Assemble financial proof
A bank balance or fixed deposit, in your own or a sponsor's account.
Apply at the Korean Embassy in Kathmandu
Individually by appointment, or through your university's batch submission where one operates.
Travel, then register
Apply for your Alien Registration Card at the local immigration office within the required period, and enrol in national health insurance.
The embassy weighs: genuine admission, verified documents, sufficient finances, a clean immigration record and a coherent study purpose
Korea applies heightened scrutiny to Nepali applicants — stricter credit and language checks, and mandatory consular verification of documents.
This is uncomfortable to publish and more useful than omitting it. Korea's Nepal intake has grown quickly, and the response has been closer checking rather than a cap. The practical implication is not that you are unlikely to be approved — it is that a thin or inconsistent file gets less benefit of the doubt here than it would elsewhere.
One consequence worth knowing about: universities with 50 or more Nepali students may submit applications in batches rather than individually, a facility reported as withdrawable if abused
Note the verb. Korean student applications from Nepal are more often delayed past an intake than refused outright.
By far the most common: document verification started too late, or documents returned for correction mid-verification
Second: financial proof that is insufficient, or below the figure current at the time of application
Third: a weak TOPIK or credit profile, or concerns about document authenticity
And decisive when present: any prior immigration violation, in Korea or elsewhere
Almost every item on that list is a timing or completeness problem rather than an eligibility one. Which is genuinely good news: it means the outcome is mostly within your control, provided you start early enough for that control to matter.

Keep the paper trail clean. Your financial proof is often a fixed deposit, and a traceable bank-to-university tuition transfer through a Nepali bank is the simplest way to show the rest of the picture holds together.
