Osaka is the practical alternative to Tokyo. It is a large commercial city with a substantial part-time job market, a strong university sector, and living costs noticeably below the capital — the most common cost-driven choice for students who still want a big city.
Culturally it is more direct and less formal than Tokyo, with a food culture that is a genuine local obsession. Kyoto and Kobe are both short train journeys away, which makes the Kansai region unusually well connected for its size.
