Pécs sits in the far south of Hungary beneath the Mecsek hills, and its university traces to 1367, making it the country's oldest. Its medical school has taught in English for decades and draws a substantial international cohort.

The city is small, historic and noticeably milder than the rest of Hungary — close enough to the Mediterranean climate zone to feel different from Budapest or Debrecen. It carries Roman and Ottoman layers, including a UNESCO-listed early Christian necropolis.

As with the other regional cities, the proposition is a serious EU-recognised degree at low cost, with the understanding that the English-speaking graduate job market is in Budapest and not here.

Founded 1367; medicine, health sciences, engineering, business and humanities, with established English-taught programmes.

03what it costs here

Pécs is among the cheapest of Hungary's university cities, which is saying something in a country already at the bottom of the EU cost range. The degree and the scholarship are unaffected by choosing it.

Against the other cities we cover in Hungary, Pécs is one of the cheaper. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.

Living costs across Hungary run roughly €500–700 a month — and the gap between Budapest and the regional cities is the largest single saving you control.

sector estimate · checked 2026-06 · partial — among the lowest in the EU; Budapest sits above the range and the regional cities below it · ⚠ volatile — no official student cost-of-living figure is published — orientation only

We do not publish a rent figure for Pécs. No government publishes one city by city, and the numbers that circulate come from consultancy blogs that cannot be checked. Your university publishes its own cost-of-living estimate for its campus — that is the number to plan with.

04living here

The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.

Climate

The mildest in Hungary — sheltered by hills and close to the Mediterranean zone. Warmer winters than Budapest or Debrecen.

Getting around

Buses, and a compact walkable centre. Small enough that most students do not need transport daily.

Housing

University dormitories and one of the cheapest private markets in the country.

Working

National rules, small market, little English-language work. Plan your funding without it.

Language

Hungarian throughout. Clinical rotations for medical students run in Hungarian.

The city

Roman and Ottoman history layered into a small university town, with a UNESCO-listed early Christian burial site in the centre.

05why the city matters
the check that outranks every city question

Whichever Hungarian city you choose, if you are here for medicine: a Hungarian medical degree is EU-recognised, but practising in Nepal still requires satisfying the Nepal Medical Council

Nepal Medical Council / sector · checked 2026-06 · partial · Nepal Medical Council ↗ · ⚠ volatile — recognition lists change — check the current one for your intake

And what the city does not change: roughly €12,000–18,000 a year

sector estimate · checked 2026-06 · partial — medicine and dentistry, against €3,000–8,000 for other English-taught programmes · ⚠ volatile — verify against the university's own fees, and check NMC recognition before committing

Medical tuition is set by the university, so moving between Hungarian cities changes your living costs and not your fees. What it never changes is the licensing question — a Hungarian degree is EU-recognised everywhere, and practising in Nepal runs through the Nepal Medical Council regardless. Confirm the university appears on the NMC's current recognised list, then let cost and climate decide between the options that pass.
