study in Debrecen

Hungary's second city and one of its biggest international student destinations — a large university with decades of English-taught medicine, at a fraction of the capital's cost.

Debrecen sits in the east of the country and is built around one of Hungary's largest universities. The University of Debrecen has taught medicine in English since the 1980s and has one of the biggest international student populations in central Europe.

For a Nepali medical applicant this is one of the two or three most relevant places in this guide: an EU-recognised medical degree, taught in English, in a city where living costs sit well below Budapest's and comfortably below most of the EU.

The honest limit is the same one that applies to every Hungarian city outside the capital: the English-speaking graduate job market is not here. For a medical student intending to return to Nepal or move within the EU, that costs nothing. For a business or computing graduate hoping to work in Hungary, it costs a great deal.

02where you would study

One very large university with an unusually long history of English-taught medicine.

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health sciences, engineering and agriculture, with English-taught programmes since the 1980s.

03what it costs here

Debrecen sits well below Budapest on housing and daily costs. Over a six-year medical degree that gap is one of the largest single savings available anywhere in this guide, and it comes with no reduction in the degree's recognition.

Against the other cities we cover in Hungary, Debrecen is one of the cheaper. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.

Medical tuition in Hungary runs roughly €12,000–18,000 a year — set by the university, not by the city, so the saving here is on living costs.

We do not publish a rent figure for Debrecen. No government publishes one city by city, and the numbers that circulate come from consultancy blogs that cannot be checked. Your university publishes its own cost-of-living estimate for its campus — that is the number to plan with.

04living here

The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.

Climate

Continental and slightly more extreme than Budapest — cold winters, hot dry summers on the Great Plain.

Getting around

Trams and buses in a compact city, with a large student discount. Most students walk or use one tram line.

Housing

University dormitories and a private market noticeably cheaper than the capital's. Scholarship holders get a dorm place or a contribution.

Working

The national rules apply, but there is far less English-language part-time work than in Budapest.

Language

Less English than the capital. Medical students find Hungarian genuinely necessary for clinical rotations with Hungarian-speaking patients.

The cohort

A very large, long-established international student community, which makes arrival easy — and makes it easy never to learn Hungarian.

05why the city matters
the trade, stated plainly

Living costs across Hungary run roughly €500–700 a month, and Debrecen sits at the bottom of that range while Budapest sits above it.

What a cheaper city never changes: a Hungarian medical degree is EU-recognised, but practising in Nepal still requires satisfying the Nepal Medical Council

Nepal Medical Council / sector · checked 2026-06 · partial · Nepal Medical Council ↗ · ⚠ volatile — recognition lists change — check the current one for your intake

For a medical student this is close to a free saving: the degree carries the same EU recognition, the licensing question is national rather than local, and the Budapest job market was never going to be part of your career anyway. Note the clinical-language point, though — rotations happen in Hungarian hospitals with Hungarian-speaking patients, and students who treat the language as optional discover in their fourth year that it was not.
