study in West Lafayette
A small Indiana town that exists for its university — Purdue's engineering reputation at some of the lowest living costs available anywhere in the United States.
West Lafayette is the purest college town on this page. Its population roughly doubles in term time, everything is oriented around Purdue University, and the cost of living is among the lowest of any serious American study destination.
Purdue's reputation rests on engineering, computer science, agriculture and aviation, and it holds a well-known tuition freeze that has kept its published rates flat for over a decade — unusual and worth verifying for your own programme.
The honest limitation is that there is not much here beyond the university. The town is small, winters are cold and grey, and the nearest large cities — Indianapolis and Chicago — are an hour and two hours away respectively. You come here for the degree and the cost, not for the place.
One large public research university, dominant in the town.
Purdue University
A leading public engineering school; aerospace, mechanical, electrical and agricultural engineering, computer science and pharmacy.Indiana University Indianapolis
An hour south in Indianapolis; medicine, health sciences, informatics and business. This is the cheapest place on this page. Rent, food and transport are all very low, the town is walkable and cyclable, and Purdue's long-running tuition freeze means published rates have been unusually stable. For a cost-constrained student, few American options compete.
Against the other cities we cover in the United States, West Lafayette is one of the cheaper. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.
The United States publishes no national student living-cost figure. The number your visa evidence must satisfy is the cost of attendance printed on your Form I-20.
The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.
Climate
Cold, grey Midwestern winters with snow, and hot humid summers. Winter clothing is a necessary first purchase.
Getting around
A local bus system free to Purdue students, and a campus small enough to walk or cycle. No car needed to live here.
Housing
Very cheap and abundant, much of it purpose-built for students within walking distance of campus.
Working
20 hours a week on campus during term on an F-1. On-campus roles are the practical option — the town's off-campus market is small.
Community
A large international graduate population, particularly in engineering, with active national student associations including a Nepali one.
Scale
Small. Indianapolis is an hour away, Chicago two. Excellent for focused study; limited if you wanted a city.
OPT is 12 months, with a 24-month STEM extension here as everywhere. Indiana gives no immigration advantage — what it gives is the lowest cost base on this page.
For engineering and computer science students this is the most efficient combination in the United States: a genuinely top-ranked programme at low total cost, with the STEM OPT extension taking work authorisation to three years. The trade-off is proximity — you will travel for interviews in a way that a Seattle or New York student will not.
West Lafayette is one of 5 cities we cover in the United States. Tap any pin to compare — the city you pick moves your total cost more than almost any other choice you make.
