study in the UK
A one-year master's, a genuine no-IELTS route, and faster visas than Australia — set against a post-study window that shrinks in January 2027. The honest picture, from a Nepali student's point of view.
The UK has become one of the top destinations for Nepali students remarkably quickly, and the reasons are concrete. A taught master's usually takes one year rather than two, which halves the tuition and gets you earning a year earlier. Visa processing is comparatively fast. And many universities accept a Medium-of-Instruction letter in place of an English test — a legitimate route that Australia does not offer.
Add strong brand recognition back home and large Nepali communities across British cities, and the appeal is easy to understand.
UK study visas issued to Nepali students: 20,572
That places Nepal fifth, having overtaken the United States.
Year-on-year change: an ~89% surge
If one fact on this page should change what you do, it is this one. It is already legislated, so it is not speculation about policy — it is a date.
From 1 January 2027 the Graduate Route drops to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. PhD stays at 3 years. Applications made by 31 December 2026 still get the full 2 years.
In practical terms: an applicant who lands a place for the 2026 intake and applies for the Graduate Route by 31 December 2026 still gets the full two years. Someone who waits a year gets eighteen months. If post-study work time is a material part of why you are choosing the UK, that difference should drive your timeline.
✓ One-year master's
Lower total cost and a faster return than two-year degrees elsewhere.
✓ Legitimate no-IELTS route
Many sponsors accept Grade-12 English or an MOI letter instead of a SELT.
✓ Faster processing
Commonly around three weeks, and historically high approval rates.
✓ Real post-study work
The Graduate Route needs no sponsor and no job offer — for now.
✓ Strong brand
UK degrees carry weight with Nepali employers and families alike.
✕ Graduate Route shrinking
Down to 18 months for bachelor's and master's from 1 January 2027.
✕ Refusals climbing
Roughly 16% in 2025, up from about 2% in 2024.
✕ No dependants
Taught students cannot bring family. Only PhD and research students may.
✕ Strict money rules
The 28-day rule plus IHS makes the upfront requirement large and unforgiving.
✕ No study-to-PR pathway
Unlike Australia or Canada, there is no points-based route from studying to settlement.
Applying without an agent: yes — realistic and fully supported
Undergraduate applications go through UCAS; postgraduate applications go directly to each university. The visa is lodged online on the UKVI site, with biometrics and the TB test done in Kathmandu. No agent is legally required at any point. The two genuine constraints are getting the 28-day financial evidence exactly right and choosing a compliant sponsor — both of which this guide covers.
Four nations with broadly comparable degrees — but one important structural difference to know before you shortlist.
Bachelor's: 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; 4 in Scotland
Master's (taught): typically 1 year
Doctoral: 3–4 years
Intakes: September/October main, with a substantial January/February secondary
UK grading differs sharply from Nepal — a UK First-Class is roughly 70%+, where 70% may be an average result in Nepal.
NEB Grade 12 / +2 is generally accepted for undergraduate entry, sometimes via a foundation year. A Nepali bachelor's is accepted for taught postgraduate entry, with sufficiency assessed per programme.
A mandatory central pre-admission credential evaluation for Nepali students: none required
Your city choice directly changes the amount of money you must prove, because the maintenance figure has only two bands — London, and everywhere else.
London
Largest and most expensive, and the higher maintenance band. Unmatched for jobs and networks.
Manchester & Birmingham
Big, student-dense, far cheaper than London, strong Nepali communities.
Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham
Mid-cost cities where many Nepali students cluster.
Coventry & Liverpool
Lower cost of living with well-established international intakes.
Glasgow & Edinburgh
Scotland — note the four-year bachelor's — with lower living costs than London.
Cardiff & Newcastle
Smaller, affordable, and comfortable places to land first.
