Eight stages on published dates. Note stage zero: where your money is held needs sorting long before you apply, because Migrationsverket rejects several forms Nepali families commonly use.
Move your funds to an accepted bank
Migrationsverket does not accept microfinance assets, credit, shares or frozen funds. Do this early so the account shows a history, not a sudden deposit.
Apply on Universityadmissions
Up to four programmes in priority order, SEK 900 fee. Rank them by what you actually want — a first-choice admission cancels the rest.
Document deadline
Transcripts, English test, passport. Sweden treats this date as final.
Results, then accept
The Notification of Selection Results.
NOC, then first tuition instalment
MoEST approval before remitting. Paying makes you 'finally admitted'.
Apply to Migrationsverket
SEK 1,500, then biometrics at a Swedish mission — which may require travelling abroad.
Residence-permit card, then travel
Sweden issues a permit rather than a visa.
Personnummer, bank, enrolment
Register with Skatteverket if your stay is a year or longer — it unlocks nearly everything else.
Swedish student housing is comparatively well organised, but it is allocated by queue rather than by need — so joining the queue early is the whole strategy.
University or nation housing
Subsidised student accommodation, particularly strong in Lund and Uppsala. Register the moment you are admitted.
Student housing queues
Municipal and foundation queues where waiting time is the currency. Join even if you are unsure.
Private rental or sublet
More expensive, and beware deposit scams aimed at arriving international students.
Carry in hand: passport with your residence-permit card, proof of final admission and paid tuition, your funds evidence, the NOC, insurance documents and accommodation details. Sweden is cold in a way that is easy to underestimate from Kathmandu — proper winter clothing is cheaper bought there than carried.
First priority: register with Skatteverket for a personnummer if your stay is a year or longer — it unlocks banking, healthcare and most services
Then: open a Swedish bank account, which is considerably easier once you have a personnummer
Support: active Nepali student networks in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund and Malmö, and other cities
The personnummer is the key to Sweden — banking, subsidised healthcare and most public services depend on it. If your stay is under a year you get a coordination number instead, which is more limited. Register with Skatteverket in your first days.

Sweden's uncapped hours are genuinely unusual — but the binding condition is study progress, and credit thresholds govern whether your permit gets extended. Working too much and falling behind is the failure mode here, not breaching an hours limit. Most students work part-time and pass; the two are not in conflict unless you let them be.
