how to apply from Nepal

A short, well-documented process. The two things to settle early are which visa centre handles Nepal, and what your term-time work rules actually are.

01the sequence

Lithuania splits your first year from the rest, which is worth understanding before you start.

1

Get admitted

Direct to the university. Lithuania's system is small enough to compare institution by institution rather than by ranking.

2

Legalise and translate your documents

Nepal has no apostille, so the full legalisation chain applies. Confirm with your university what translation it and the Migration Department require.

3

Lodge the national Type D visa

Through the designated visa centre. A decision commonly follows in about fifteen calendar days, with a state fee of roughly €140.

4

Travel, then apply for the residence permit

The D visa covers roughly your first year. The temporary residence permit carries you through the rest of the degree — and it is the document that gives you your work rights.

Your work rights attach to the temporary residence permit, not to the Type D visa that covers your first year — so earnings do not begin the day you land.

That distinction is worth holding on to. The work entitlement attaches to the temporary residence permit, not to the D visa — so the first months, before the permit exists, are not when your earnings begin.

02the timeline

September is the main intake. The visa decision itself is quick; the legalisation chain in front of it is what sets your timeline.

8–7 months out

Shortlist and apply

Vilnius and Kaunas hold most of the international provision. For medicine, check the Nepal Medical Council's recognised list before anything else.

7–6 months out

Start legalisation

The full chain, because Nepal has no apostille. It does not depend on your offer, and it is the longest item here.

6–5 months out

Confirm the visa channel

Lithuania has no embassy in Nepal. Ask your university, in writing, which visa centre handles Nepali applicants and whether submission is in Kathmandu or New Delhi.

5–4 months out

Accept, MoEST NOC, arrange funds and insurance

Health insurance must be arranged before the visa is issued, not on arrival.

4–3 months out

Lodge the Type D visa

Decision commonly in about fifteen calendar days. This is the fast part.

1 month out

Arrange accommodation and travel

Dormitories are cheap and worth applying for as soon as you are admitted.

on arrival

Apply for the temporary residence permit

This is what carries you past year one — and what gives you your work rights. Start it promptly rather than late.

03language & entry

English-taught study is well supplied here for a country this size, and Lithuanian is a later concern.

The English requirement: IELTS or TOEFL at the level the programme sets, with some institutions accepting other evidence of English-medium schooling

Lithuanian: not needed for English-taught programmes, but it opens most local employment and is relevant to long-term settlement

Over five hundred English-taught programmes is genuinely substantial for two and a half million people, and English is widely spoken on campus and among younger Lithuanians.

Lithuanian becomes relevant for employment rather than for study. Given the country's work rights are one of its selling points, that is not a trivial distinction — the entitlement is national, the jobs are local, and the local jobs are largely in Lithuanian outside the technology sector.

04choosing a university

The system is small, which makes the comparison genuinely tractable.

Vilnius University

The oldest and largest, founded in 1579 — sciences, medicine, humanities, law and economics, in the capital.

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

In Kaunas. The country's medical university and its main international draw, teaching medicine in English.

Kaunas University of Technology

Engineering, informatics and technology, with substantial English-taught provision at low cost.

VILNIUS TECH and others

Technical and specialist institutions in Vilnius, plus regional universities including at Klaipėda on the coast.

For medicine the decisive check is the same as for China, Hungary, Czechia and Latvia: the Nepal Medical Council's recognised list. For everything else, compare on programme and cost across a set small enough to examine individually.

05the documents

Acceptance letter

From a recognised Lithuanian higher education institution.

Legalised academic documents

The full chain, because Nepal has no apostille.

Translations

Confirm with your university and the Migration Department what language and what form of certification they require.

Proof of funds

A bank statement in your own or a sponsor's name, or a scholarship confirmation.

Health insurance

Mandatory, and arranged before the visa is issued rather than on arrival.

Passport and photographs

To the visa centre's specification, with biometrics at lodgement.

Accommodation evidence

Where required — dormitory confirmation is usually the simplest form.

Tuition payment evidence

Where your institution requires it before the visa stage.

The ordering detail worth noting: insurance comes before the visa is issued. It is not an arrival task, and treating it as one stops the application.

06from Nepal
Nepal step — the MoEST NOC comes after your offer and before you remit any tuition

Two items dominate the Nepal side: the legalisation chain, and confirming the visa channel. Lithuania has no embassy here, and whether Nepali applicants submit in Kathmandu through a designated centre or travel to New Delhi is the single most consequential logistical question — it is the difference between an errand and a trip.

Ask your university's international office in writing, and do it before you plan anything else.
