study in Tampere

Finland's industrial heartland turned technology city — strong engineering and health programmes, between two lakes, at lower cost than the capital.

Tampere is Finland's second urban centre and its engineering city. Built on nineteenth-century industry between two lakes, it has converted that base into a technology and manufacturing economy — machinery, automation, software and health technology.

Tampere University merged the region's technical and general universities, which produced an institution unusually strong across engineering, computing, medicine and health technology simultaneously.

Living costs are meaningfully lower than Helsinki, the city is compact enough to cycle across, and the student culture is prominent. It is also, by common agreement, the sauna capital of a country that takes saunas seriously.

02where you would study

One merged research university plus a university of applied sciences.

Tampere University

Engineering, computing, medicine, health technology and social sciences, formed from a technical and a general university.

Tampere University of Applied Sciences

Applied; engineering, business, health care and media.

Links go to each institution’s own website. We are not an agent for any of them and are paid nothing if you apply — always confirm fees, entry requirements and intakes on the university’s own course page.

03what it costs here

Tampere costs less than Helsinki across housing and daily spending, with the same national permit requirement and the same scholarship structures. For engineering students it is often the better value of the two.

Against the other cities we cover in Finland, Tampere is mid-range. That is our reading of this country’s own spread, not a published index.

The residence permit requires you to show at least €800 a month, or €9,600 a year.

We do not publish a rent figure for Tampere. No government publishes one city by city, and the numbers that circulate come from consultancy blogs that cannot be checked. Your university publishes its own cost-of-living estimate for its campus — that is the number to plan with.

04living here

The practical texture of the place — what a week actually looks like.

Climate

Colder than Helsinki, being inland — more snow, longer freeze, and the same very short winter days.

Getting around

Trams and buses with student rates, in a compact city. Cycling works well outside the winter months.

Housing

Student housing foundations offer cheap rooms; queues are shorter than Helsinki's. Apply immediately on admission.

Working

An average of 30 hours a week under current rules. Technology and engineering roles are the most accessible in English.

Language

Programmes are taught in English; the city runs in Finnish. Basic Finnish opens the local part-time market considerably.

Industry

Automation, machinery and health technology employers are local — the practical reason to choose Tampere for engineering.

05why the city matters
the requirement that does not move

The residence permit requires you to show at least €800 a month, or €9,600 a year — the same figure in Tampere as in Helsinki, though your actual costs here will be lower.

This is a common source of confusion: the permit requirement is a national minimum, not a budget estimate, and it does not fall because you chose a cheaper city. Show the full amount regardless. Where the cheaper city helps is in what you spend afterwards — and in how far a part-time job goes.
