the student visa
China assesses you before you ever reach a visa counter. By the time you lodge, the substantive question — is this a real student at a real institution — has already been answered by a form your university issued.
China splits its student visa by duration, and the split has consequences beyond how long you may stay.
The degree route: X1, for study longer than 180 days — every bachelor's, master's, doctorate and MBBS
The short route: X2, for study of 180 days or less — short courses, exchange terms and most language programmes
And what X1 requires after arrival: an X1 must be converted into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival, at the local Exit-Entry Administration; X2 holders normally stay on the visa itself
Almost every Nepali student reading this needs an X1 — a bachelor's, a master's, a doctorate or an MBBS all run well past 180 days. The practical difference is that an X1 is not the thing that lets you stay: it is the thing that lets you enter, and you convert it to a residence permit once you are there.
The X1 is an entry visa, not permission to remain. Miss the 30-day residence permit conversion and your stay is irregular — which is a far harder problem to fix than an ordinary paperwork delay.
This is where China differs most sharply from Australia, Canada or the UK, and it changes where you should put your effort.
Where the vetting happens: largely at the JW stage — the form confirms an authorised host institution, an approved programme and registered enrolment, so the government's control point is which universities may invite you at all
What the visa centre then checks: the passport, the printed COVA form and photo, the JW form and the Admission Letter — a completeness and authenticity check rather than an assessment of your intentions
There is no genuine-student essay, no credibility interview, and no equivalent of the subclass 500's Genuine Student questions. The system's control point is institutional: only universities authorised to host international students can issue a JW form, so the government limits who can be invited rather than interrogating each person invited.
The consequence for you is direct. Effort spent perfecting a personal statement for the visa is wasted; effort spent verifying the institution is not. Your study plan matters — but it matters to the university that admits you, not to the officer who takes your file.
The mechanics are unusually clear, and all of it happens in Kathmandu.
Fill the COVA form online
China's online visa application. Complete it before anything else — the appointment system expects a submitted form.
Book an appointment through AVAS
Slots are finite and tighten before the September intake. Book as soon as your Admission Notice and JW form arrive.
Attend the CVASC in person
At Rising Mall, Kamaladi. Biometrics are taken at lodgement, so nobody can submit on your behalf.
Collect, and check every detail
Check the visa type, the number of entries and the validity dates before you leave the counter. Corrections are far easier there than later.
Processing time: roughly 4–10 working days
Where Nepali applicants apply: in Kathmandu, at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center — there is no third-country trip
That last point is worth dwelling on, because it is a real and underrated advantage. Students bound for several countries in this guide have to travel to New Delhi and wait there at their own expense. For China you do not leave Kathmandu.
Refusals for Nepali applicants cluster, and the clusters are avoidable.
An institution that cannot host you
No authorisation means no JW form, and no JW form means no visa — whatever the offer letter says.
A passport that falls short
The embassy asks for more than six months' validity and blank visa pages. Renewing from Nepal at short notice costs weeks.
A COVA form that disagrees with the paper file
The printed form and the photo must match what you uploaded. Inconsistencies get the application handed back at intake.
Finances that do not hold up
Not the amount so much as the provenance — money that appeared recently with no documented origin.
Mismatched names
Passport, transcripts, citizenship and the Admission Notice must all agree. Nepali name-order variations cause real problems.
An incomplete COVA form
Blank fields and inconsistencies with the paper file get the application handed back at intake.
Note what is not on that list: your intentions, your English, your family circumstances, or how convincingly you explain your choice. Those decide Australian and Canadian applications. They do not decide this one.
One sequencing note that costs people their intake. The notarised translations and the medical examination run in parallel, not in series — and the examination belongs to your arrival, not to your visa appointment. Students who queue them one after another routinely lose four to six weeks they did not have.
