how to apply from Nepal

Two stages and one prerequisite. The prerequisite — confirming the institution is licensed — is where this destination is won or lost.

01the sequence

Malta's process is public, two-stage and genuinely DIY-able. No agent is required, and the parts that go wrong are parts you can control.

0

Confirm the institution is licensed and accredited

With the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority. Private colleges vary widely in quality here, and this check separates the ones worth your money from the ones that are not.

1

Get admitted, pay, and keep the receipt

Meet entry — often with a medium-of-instruction certificate rather than IELTS. Pay tuition or the deposit and keep the payment receipt: it is part of the visa file.

2

Apply for the national long-stay Type D visa

With your enrolment letter, tuition receipt, financial evidence, bank statements, insurance and accommodation proof. Biometrics are taken at submission.

3

Travel on the Type D visa

It is a long-stay visa, so it permits Schengen travel subject to the usual entry conditions.

4

Apply for the residence permit within ninety days

In person at Identità, with biometrics. This cannot be done online, and the card itself takes several weeks after that.

a rule that disqualifies whole categories of course

The long-stay visa is for courses of more than 90 days, and online, distance and hybrid programmes are not eligible for it — whatever the institution calls them.

That rule catches people who have been sold a short programme or a hybrid one. If a course is delivered online or partly online, it does not support this visa — regardless of how the institution describes it.

02the timeline

October is the main intake and February is common at private colleges. The binding constraint is the visa processing time, and there is an unusual window rule at the front of it.

Check licensing, then shortlist

MFHEA first. Then compare the University of Malta, MCAST and any private college on cost, programme and accreditation.

6–5 months out

Sort the English requirement

Ask whether a medium-of-instruction certificate is accepted before booking IELTS. Many institutions take one, and it saves both a fee and several weeks.

Apply and accept

Note the window: applications are generally accepted no earlier than six months and no later than around nine weeks before your course begins.

4–3 months out

MoEST NOC, then remit tuition

The payment receipt is part of the visa file, so this has to happen before you apply for the visa rather than after.

Lodge the Type D visa application

Enrolment letter, receipt, funds, bank statements, insurance, accommodation proof, biometrics. Processing runs about eight to twelve weeks.

Six months of accommodation proof is expected, so housing is not something to leave until you land.

03language & entry

This is Malta's quiet advantage for Nepali applicants, and it is worth understanding precisely.

The language of the country: English is an official language of Malta and the medium of instruction

The entry route that saves you a test: many institutions accept a medium-of-instruction certificate from your Nepali school or college instead of IELTS

Graduate entry: a recognised bachelor's degree, with field fit assessed per programme

A medium-of-instruction certificate is a letter from your Nepali school or college confirming that you were taught and examined in English. Where an institution accepts one, it replaces IELTS entirely — and for a student from an English-medium background that is a genuinely material saving.

Two cautions. Acceptance is set per institution and per programme, so confirm in writing before skipping the test. And an MOI certificate is only useful if it is genuine and verifiable — this is not a route around an English requirement you do not actually meet.

04choosing an institution

Malta's sector has three tiers and the gap between them is wider than in most destinations here.

University of Malta

The main public university and the strongest, most internationally recognised option. Standard EU-style entry requirements and the widest research base.

MCAST

The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology — vocational and applied, well established, and a genuine option for technical fields.

American University of Malta

A licensed private university with American-style programmes. Verify accreditation and programme detail as you would anywhere.

Private colleges

Cheaper and more flexible, and the widest quality range. Some are solid; some exist because a student visa needs an enrolment letter. Check every one.

The test is not prestige, it is licensing. An MFHEA-accredited private college is a legitimate choice, and can be the right one on cost. An unaccredited one is not a cheaper version of the same thing — it is a different and much worse product.

Ask any institution directly for its accreditation status and the specific accreditation of the programme you are joining. A licensed institution can still run a programme that is not separately accredited, and the answer should be given readily.

05the documents

Enrolment letter

From a licensed institution. The document everything else attaches to.

Tuition payment receipt

Required at the visa stage, which is why the NOC and the remittance have to come first.

Passport

With comfortable validity beyond your intended stay, and clear scans.

Bank statements

Covering at least the last three months of transactions, in your name or a sponsor's.

Proof of funds

Against the published formula rather than a flat figure — see the costs page.

Health insurance

Comprehensive cover including hospital treatment, evacuation and repatriation.

Accommodation proof

Commonly six months' worth. Arranged from Nepal, before you fly.

Photographs and forms

To specification, with biometrics taken at submission.

One rule governs this whole package: consistency. Names, dates of birth and spellings must match exactly across your passport, certificates, bank documents and application. Inconsistency between Nepali documents — where name order and transliteration vary legitimately — is among the most common causes of refusal here.

06from Nepal
Nepal step — the MoEST NOC comes before the tuition transfer — and the receipt is part of your visa file

The ordering here is tighter than in most destinations. You cannot lodge the visa application without the tuition receipt, you cannot get the receipt without remitting, and you cannot remit without the NOC. Three sequential steps sit in front of an eight-to-twelve-week processing time.

Notarised translations of any Nepali-language documents belong in the same early block, for the consistency reason above.
