how to apply from Nepal
Applications go directly to each provider, and the sequence has one unusually student-friendly feature: you can often pay tuition after the visa decision rather than before it.
Start 8–12 months ahead. The order below matters more than the exact dates — particularly where the tuition payment sits, which is later here than almost anywhere else.
Shortlist NZQA-approved programmes
Approval is the eligibility gate. If post-study work matters, check now what qualification level your programme sits at — it sets your PSWV length.
Meet entry and English
Sit a test, or confirm your provider accepts an MOI letter.
Apply directly
To each provider. Two to four applications is typical.
Offer of Place
Your admission document, and the basis of the visa application.
MoEST NOC
After the offer, before any remittance.
Lodge the visa, then medical and biometrics
Online with Immigration NZ, then the panel physician and VFS Kathmandu.
Pay tuition
Under Approval in Principle you pay once they have decided — then the visa is granted.
Give yourself 8–12 months
Applications go directly to each provider — there is no centralised national portal for international applicants
Applying to 2–4 providers is typical.
The eligibility marker: your provider and programme must be NZQA-approved
Check NZQA approval before you get attached to a programme — it is New Zealand's equivalent of Australia's CRICOS or Canada's DLI, and without it there is no student visa.
Worth calling out separately, because it changes how much money you put at risk and when.
Under Approval in Principle you pay your tuition after Immigration New Zealand has assessed your case, not before.
In the US you pay a deposit before anyone assesses you. In Canada you pay before the PAL. Here, the substantive decision commonly comes first. If your Offer of Place mentions Approval in Principle, that is a feature — not a hold-up.
A single national academic threshold: does not exist
English: a test result, or an MOI letter where the provider accepts one
New Zealand is also noted as relatively lenient on study gaps where they are well explained — which matters if you have been working, or if your academic timeline has a break in it. Explain it clearly rather than hoping it goes unnoticed.
Transcripts & certificates
NEB/+2 and bachelor's records, with certified translations where not in English.
English evidence
A test result, or an MOI letter where the provider accepts one.
Statement of purpose
Why this programme and what follows it.
CV
For postgraduate applications.
Letters of recommendation
Programme-dependent.
Passport
Valid for your intended stay.
Because Approval in Principle pushes your tuition payment later, the NOC timing is a little more forgiving here than elsewhere — but it still gates the remittance, so get it moving as soon as you hold an Offer of Place.
