how to apply from Nepal

Germany runs two application channels and two intakes, and the deadlines are firm. Here is which channel applies to you, what anabin does to your credentials, and where the Studienkolleg year fits.

01the timeline

Two intakes, and the winter one is much larger. Start 8–12 months ahead — the extra time absorbs language testing, anabin checks, certified translations and embassy appointment backlogs, all of which take longer than they look.

12–8 months out

Check anabin, pick your channel

Establish how your Nepali qualification is rated, and whether your universities use uni-assist or their own portal.

10–8 months out

Language certificate

IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught programmes; TestDaF, DSH, Goethe or Telc for German-taught.

early May – 15 July

Winter intake applications

The main window. Summer-intake deadlines cluster around 15 January instead.

after admission

Zulassung, then funds

Your admission letter arrives, then you arrange the blocked account or an accepted alternative.

3–4 months out

NOC, then the visa

MoEST approval before remitting anything, then the Kathmandu embassy — which can take up to three months.

Give yourself 8–12 months

02uni-assist or direct

Germany has no single national portal. There are two channels, and which one you use is decided by the university, not by you.

uni-assist: a centralised portal that pre-checks and forwards applications to many universities, and evaluates foreign credentials

uni-assist · checked 2026-06 · verified — each application carries a fee — higher for the first university, lower for each additional in the same cycle

Direct: some institutions run their own portals and do not use uni-assist

university pages · checked 2026-06 · verified

Check each university's page before assuming. uni-assist charges per application — a higher fee for the first university and a lower one for each additional in the same cycle — so batching your applications within one cycle is cheaper than spreading them.

03the bachelor's bridge

This is the structural fact that reshapes Germany for school-leavers, and it is better understood before you apply than after.

if you are applying after +2

Nepal's 10+2 is generally not treated as equivalent to the German university-entrance qualification, so direct bachelor's entry usually needs a Studienkolleg foundation year or one completed year of a Nepali bachelor's first.

German Embassy Kathmandu + anabin / uni-assist · checked 2026-06 · verified

So there are two routes into a German bachelor's: a Studienkolleg foundation year ending in the Feststellungsprüfung, or one completed year of a Nepali bachelor's before you apply. Neither is a penalty — both are normal — but both need to be in your plan and your budget from the start.

Master's applicants with a completed Nepali bachelor's mostly avoid this entirely, which is why Germany suits postgraduate applicants considerably better than school-leavers.

04credentials & language

Credential checking: anabin and uni-assist establish how your Nepali qualification is rated

anabin / uni-assist · checked 2026-06 · verified

APS certification: not required for Nepal-issued credentials — only for Indian and Chinese degrees

German Embassy Kathmandu — official · checked 2026-06 · verified

For English-taught programmes: IELTS or TOEFL

DAAD / university pages · checked 2026-06 · verified

For German-taught programmes: TestDaF or DSH, or Goethe and Telc certificates

DAAD / university pages · checked 2026-06 · verified — at visa stage the embassy accepts Goethe Kathmandu, VHS Bhaktapur/Pokhara or Telc only

Note the embassy's narrower rule at visa stage: German certificates are accepted from Goethe Kathmandu, VHS Bhaktapur or Pokhara, or Telc only. A certificate from elsewhere may satisfy your university and still not satisfy the embassy — check both before you pay for a course.

05the documents

NEB certificates & marksheets

School and higher-secondary records, with certified translations.

Bachelor's transcripts

For master's applications.

anabin / uni-assist check

The credential evaluation that establishes what your qualification is worth.

Language certificate

English or German, depending on the programme's language of instruction.

Letter of motivation

Needed for admission, and again — self-written — for the visa.

CV and references

CV generally; references depending on the programme.

Everything in Nepali needs a certified translation into German or English. Arrange these early — they sit on the critical path for both the university and the embassy.

Nepal step — get the MoEST NOC before remitting any tuition or blocked-account deposit

A blocked-account deposit is a remittance like any other, so it needs the NOC first. Sequencing this wrongly is one of the more common ways Nepali applicants lose weeks.
