your english test
It is the most expensive single item in the document set and the one with the longest lead time. It is also the one where a booking mistake — not a language problem — costs students an intake.
This is the misunderstanding that does the most damage, and it is structural rather than about your English.
There are two separate English requirements — the university's and the visa's — and clearing the lower one does not clear the higher.
Universities set an admission requirement. Immigration authorities set a separate visa requirement. They are decided by different bodies for different reasons, and the numbers are not the same.
The trap runs both ways. A university may waive its own English requirement on a medium-of-instruction letter from your Nepali college — that waiver has no effect at all on the visa. And a visa floor that looks low does not mean the course will take you.
Plan to clear the higher of the two, and check both on official sources before you book.
IELTS Academic
The most widely accepted from Nepal, delivered by both the British Council and IDP, on paper and on computer, in several cities.
PTE Academic
Computer-based with fast results. Accepted by most Australian, New Zealand and UK institutions and by many elsewhere — confirm for your specific course.
TOEFL iBT
Strong acceptance in the United States and widely recognised elsewhere. Test-centre and at-home options exist; acceptance of the at-home version varies.
Duolingo English Test
Cheap and quick, and accepted by a growing number of universities — but far less often accepted for visa purposes. Never assume it clears both bars.
For a UK Student visa in particular, some routes require a test from a Secure English Language Test provider taken at an approved centre — a narrower list than the tests universities accept. Check your route before you book.
Get your passport first
The test is booked and sat against your passport, and the name and number on your result must match it exactly. Booking before your passport exists, or with a different spelling, is the single most common self-inflicted problem here.
Check what your course and your visa each require
Two numbers, from two official sources: the course page for the admission requirement, and the immigration department for the visa floor. Write both down before choosing a test.
Book early, and book a fallback
Seats around the main intakes fill. Assume you might resit, and leave a gap in the calendar for it — a resit you planned for costs money; one you didn't costs an intake.
Choose your city
Kathmandu has the most frequent sittings, with regular test dates in Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar and other cities. The venue on your booking is often a hired hall, not the test provider's office.
Send the result where it needs to go
Most providers let you nominate institutions to receive the result directly. Do it at booking or straight after — retrospective sending sometimes costs extra.

How long a result stays valid: usually two years

PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo are booked through their own providers' portals rather than a Nepali office, and PTE and TOEFL test centres in Kathmandu are listed on those portals at booking. We list only the two centres whose Nepal contact details we could corroborate — the address on your booking confirmation is always the one that counts.
Many Nepali students are taught in English and reasonably ask why they should pay for a test at all. The answer depends on who is asking.
Some universities will accept a medium-of-instruction letter from your Nepali college in place of a test score. This is institution-specific — never universal — and you should get it in writing from that institution rather than assuming.
Immigration authorities are a separate matter. Their exemptions are narrower and usually based on passport and prior qualifications rather than the language your college taught in. For most Nepali applicants, an MOI letter does not remove the visa requirement.
An MOI letter and the visa English requirement: an MOI letter generally does NOT satisfy the visa English requirement, even where a university accepts it for admission
Which test is easiest?
Wrong question — ask which one your course and your visa both accept, then which format suits you. A cheaper test that your visa route doesn't recognise costs you the whole fee plus a resit on the right one.
Can I book before my passport arrives?
Technically some providers allow another ID at booking, but you are creating a mismatch you will have to fix later. Wait for the passport.
How many times can I resit?
There is no cap on IELTS or PTE attempts, though each is a full fee. What matters more is your application deadline — build one resit into the calendar from the start.
My score meets the visa floor but not the course. What now?
You resit, or you take a pathway or pre-sessional English programme where the university offers one. Both are normal. Applying anyway and hoping is not.
Does an old result still count?
Most providers treat scores as valid for two years, and institutions and missions usually follow that. If your result is close to expiring at the point you would arrive, check specifically — expiry is measured against different dates by different bodies.
