Civil Engineering
A high-demand field abroad with strong PR pull — but back home, NEC now gates practice behind a tough licensing exam.

Share of Nepali outbound students in civil engineering
Around 3,000 Nepali students enter the labour market each year after completing engineering studies abroad (all disciplines combined).
Technical streams including engineering require prior approval / an eligibility step from the relevant council before MoEST will issue the No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Without the required council document MoEST will not process the NOC, and without an NOC Nepali banks cannot legally remit tuition and the student visa is incomplete.
To practise engineering in Nepal you must register with the Nepal Engineering Council.
Since a 2023 amendment to the NEC Act, passing the NEC licensing examination is mandatory to obtain the licence — for graduates from Nepal and from abroad alike.
Engineers who studied abroad need an equivalence certificate (via an authorised Nepal-government agency / Tribhuvan University) for the foreign degree before registering.
The qualifying degree must be from a university NEC recognises; degrees from unlisted universities may not be accepted.
NEC licensing exam outcome (first sitting, 2023): 565 of 2,006 passed (~72% did not)
NEC registration fee (after passing): ≈NPR 5,200 (varies by category)
NEC licensing exam sittings: At least twice a year

Using a protected engineer title or signing off work abroad usually requires assessment/registration with that country's engineering body (e.g. Engineers Australia, provincial P.Eng. in Canada, the UK Engineering Council).
Australia
Sustained infrastructure demand and engineering occupations on skilled lists; assessment via Engineers Australia.
Canada
Strong infrastructure sector and PR alignment; practice title requires provincial P.Eng. licensure.
Germany
Deep civil/structural sector and low fees, though German-language ability matters for most roles.
Can I practise civil engineering in Nepal after studying abroad?
Yes, after registering with the Nepal Engineering Council — which needs your foreign degree recognised (equivalence) and, since 2023, a pass in the NEC licensing exam. Check your university is NEC-recognised before you enrol.
Do I need approval before going abroad to study engineering?
Engineering is a regulated technical stream, so a council step is tied to your No Objection Certificate; without the NOC you can't legally remit tuition and the student visa is incomplete. Settle it early.
Does civil engineering help with PR abroad?
It can — civil engineering appears on skilled-occupation and shortage lists in several destinations. The exact route, points and status are country-specific; see the country pages.
